The district of Bernburg was a district in the southern center of the state of Saxony-Anhalt . On July 1, 2007, it was incorporated into the new Salzlandkreis as part of the regional reform in Saxony-Anhalt .

geography

The area of the former district, named after its district town Bernburg , lay on the southern edge of the Magdeburg Börde on the Saale , almost exactly in the middle between Halle (Saale) and Magdeburg . It bordered in the north on the district of Schönebeck , in the east on the district of Koethen , in the south on the Saalkreis and in the west on the districts of Mansfelder Land and Aschersleben-Staßfurt .

history

In the Duchy of Anhalt , the district of Bernburg was formed in 1863 from the Anhalt-Bernburg region. After the Duchy of Anhalt became the Free State of Anhalt in 1918 , the district was called the District of Bernburg from 1933 . At the same time, in 1933, the city of Bernburg became a district. On April 1, 1942, in order to straighten the border between Prussia and Anhalt, the community of Unterwiederstedt was reclassified from the district of Bernburg to the Mansfeld mountain district .

After 1945, the district initially belonged to the newly formed province of Saxony-Anhalt , which in 1947 became the state of Saxony-Anhalt . As part of the first district reform in the GDR in 1950 , the following cities and municipalities were incorporated into the Bernburg district:

At the same time, the communities of Großmühlingen and Kleinmühlingen moved from the Bernburg district to the Schönebeck district .

In 1952 there was a comprehensive district reform in the GDR , in which, among other things, the states were de facto dissolved and replaced by districts . The circumference of the circle was changed again:

After the reunification of the two German states, the Bernburg district became the Bernburg district in the re-established state of Saxony-Anhalt in 1990 . With the district reform of Saxony-Anhalt in 1994 , the town of Güsten from the Staßfurt district was incorporated into the Bernburg district.

During the district reform in 2007 in Saxony-Anhalt, the district of Bernburg was merged with the district of Schönebeck and the district of Aschersleben-Staßfurt to form the new salt district . Bernburg became the county seat of the new district. In the runoff election on May 6, 2007, Ulrich Gerstner (SPD), the district administrator of the previous district of Bernburg, was elected as district administrator for the new district, with a slight lead over the district administrator of the previous district of Aschersleben-Staßfurt, Heike Brehmer (CDU).
