geography

Vockerode is located directly on the southern bank of the Elbe, about 4 km from Dessau-Roßlau . Vockerode lies on the one hand in the middle of the Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Realm , which was founded in the second half of the 18th century under the reign of Prince Leopold III. Friedrich Franz von Anhalt-Dessau was created and is, on the other hand, embedded in the Middle Elbe Biosphere Reserve . The garden realm and the biosphere reserve have been included in the list of world cultural heritage by UNESCO .

After the Elbe straightening in 1933/34 near the Sieglitzer Berg am Kurzen Wurf , an area now north of the Elbe was created near Klieken .

history

Vockerode is first mentioned in 1400 as Vogkenrode . In a document from 1480, the place is mentioned as Vockenröd , which at that time belonged to the former Nienburg monastery . The post-Slavic establishment of the village is traced back to Flemish settlers. The place was originally laid out as a street village, but with the expansion to the north it acquired the character of a clustered village . The fishing industry has been documented since 1594. The first school was built in 1794. In 1810/12, under the direction of Christoph Hesekiel, the village church was built as an early example of neo-Gothic sacred architecture as a brick building with a double-towered western front and a choir polygon the width of a ship.

Until the construction of the motorway bridge in 1937, Vockerode had a ferry station.

When construction began on the large power plant in 1937, the appearance of the town changed from a farming and fishing village to an industrial site. Vockerode was a power plant location for almost 60 years. The four large chimneys of the now decommissioned lignite power plant Vockerode , which have shaped the decades, were blown up in 2001.

In 2007, the municipality of Vockerode was incorporated into the Wittenberg district due to a district reform from the former Anhalt-Zerbst district.

On January 1, 2011, Vockerode was incorporated into the new town of Oranienbaum-Wörlitz.
