The station is located in the Dessau district south of the Elbe , west of the city center there. It is a through station in north-south direction . The listed entrance building is located to the east of the tracks, from which a pedestrian tunnel with elevators opens up the platforms and provides a connection to the western exit.

On the forecourt to the east there is a tram and bus stop as well as an information and sales pavilion for the Dessauer Verkehrsgesellschaft , as well as bicycle parking spaces. The western entrance including the forecourt was redesigned in 2010 and a P + R car park and other covered bicycle parking spaces were set up.

history

Dessau and Roßlau were very important in rail traffic early on because of the crossing of the Elbe . The first rail connection was opened on September 1, 1840 by the Berlin-Anhalt Railway Company . In 1911 the connection to Bitterfeld was electrified . Due to the settlement of several industrial companies in the region, for example the Junkers aircraft works, the railway was of great importance for logistics.

1945 (above), 1959 (below)

During the Second World War , the station building was destroyed in a bomb attack on March 7, 1945 and was rebuilt by 1952.

After the station was also a stop for Interregio and Intercity trains for a long time , it has been served exclusively by regional traffic since 2006 - with the exception of individual IC trains, as Dessau is away from the main lines Berlin - Wittenberg - Halle and Magdeburg - Halle - Leipzig is located.

In the years 2008 to 2011, a comprehensive renovation including a fundamental renovation of the track and overhead line systems of the Roßlau / Dessau railway traffic junction and thus also the systems at Dessau main station took place. The track plan of the station has been simplified so that a speed of 160 km / h is possible. On December 5, 2010 the electronic signal box (ESTW) Dessau went into operation.

A Park & Ride facility at the newly designed west exit has been available since 2007 as part of the interface program.

As part of the Federal Republic of Germany's economic stimulus package I , the reception building was energetically renovated by DB Station & Service AG by 2011 , which reduced energy consumption by more than half. The focus of the renovation measures was on the comprehensive design and reorganization of the station. The combination of exhibition areas from the city, the Bauhaus Foundation and the Federal Environment Agency with a waiting area is intended to make the interior a place to experience and make the waiting time entertaining and pleasant. In 2013 the premises of the station mission were expanded and modernized.

On December 13, 2015, Dessau was connected to the network of the S-Bahn Central Germany .

In November 2018, the renovation work began on platforms 2/3, 4/5 and 6/7 as well as their roofing and lighting. The platform equipment such as showcases, benches and rubbish bins is specially made in order to take into account the protection of historical monuments. A total of over five million euros was invested. The work should be completed by the end of 2019. In addition, it was planned to redesign the forecourt of the train station and the bus station by the end of 2018. Of the approximately three million euros estimated for this, around 1.9 million euros were funded by Nahverkehrsservice Sachsen-Anhalt (NASA) via the interface program for local public transport , the city's own contribution was 300,000 euros.

Transport links

The main train station is of supraregional importance. Long-distance traffic has not existed since the new Berlin Central Station went into operation in 2006 - apart from a few IC trains. The trains on the Dessau - Wörlitz line (Dessau-Wörlitzer Railway) only run during the summer season. Deutsche Bahn assigns the station to station category 3.

From June 2019 to March 2020 inclusive, the Magdeburg – Leipzig railway line between Sachsendorf and Halle was closed due to construction work in Köthen . In the meantime, the Intercity trains from lines 55 and 56 were diverted and stopped at Dessau Hauptbahnhof and Bitterfeld.

In the local public transport network , the main station is connected by two tram and six bus lines. In addition, the PlusBus line 310 of the state network Saxony-Anhalt to Gräfenhainichen via Oranienbaum, operated by Vetter Verkehrsbetriebe, starts here . The night bus routes also start at the train station .
