Ten communities - including the cities of Oranienbaum and Wörlitz - were united in the administrative community of Wörlitzer Winkel in the Wittenberg district to handle their administrative business. On January 1, 2011, the administrative community was dissolved and the new town of Oranienbaum-Wörlitz was founded by law from the member communities.
The administrative community existed since November 1st, 1994, originally from the five member communities Gohrau, Rehsen, Riesigk, Vockerode and City of Wörlitz (seat of the VG). After the dissolution of the administrative community Oranienbaum on January 1, 2005, the five municipalities of this VG were incorporated into the VG Wörlitzer Winkel (Brandhorst, Griesen, Horstdorf, Kakau and the city of Oranienbaum). Oranienbaum became the new headquarters of VG Wörlitzer Winkel.
On July 1, 2007, the Wörlitzer Winkel administrative community was incorporated into the Wittenberg district due to the district reform from the former Anhalt-Zerbst district.
The former area of the administrative community south of the bank of the middle Elbe is part of the under Prince Leopold III. Friedrich Franz von Anhalt-Dessau created the Dessau-Wörlitz cultural and garden landscape . The tourist magnet and not insignificant economic factor in this area in the Middle Elbe Biosphere Reserve is the Wörlitzer Park . The federal highway 9 (Berlin – Munich) with the junction Vockerode and the Elbe crossing as well as the federal highway 107 (federal highway 9 with the junction Dessau-Ost –Oranienbaum– Gräfenhainichen ) ran through the area of the VG . Between Wörlitz and Coswig (Anhalt) there is a Gierseilferry over the Elbe . The next train stations are in Dessau-Roßlau , Graefenhainichen, Radis , Bergwitz or in Coswig . The Wörlitz and Oranienbaum stations of the Dessau-Wörlitzer Railway are only served in the summer season.
