Center of Zabitz

geography

Zabitz lies between Schönebeck (Elbe) and Köthen (Anhalt) on the edge of the Middle Elbe Biosphere Reserve .

The following districts of the former municipality were identified:

history

Zabitz was first mentioned in 1332 or on December 28, 1156. It is also possible that a settlement with this name may have existed earlier in the 10th century, as the ending "itz" indicates a Slavic (Wendish) origin.

But it is also assumed that the name Zabitz can be traced back to an Old Sorbian basic form "Sebudici", which contains the Slavic personal name Sebud. The element "ici" was Germanized as "itz" and the middle syllable was dropped. This is how the name "Sebitz" came about, which was changed dialect to the current "Zabitz".

In the years after 1945, Zabitz was primarily an agricultural place. Many citizens of the place worked in the local LPG . With the development and the gradual recovery of the place after the Second World War , more and more residents were looking for work in the large companies of the then district town of Köthen. The main supply field, however, remained agriculture, which was also noticeable in the individual households.

On July 1, 1950, the previously independent communities of Maxdorf and Thurau were incorporated.

On January 1, 2010, the previously independent municipalities of Zabitz, Chörau , Diebzig , Dornbock , Drosa , Elsnigk , Großpaschleben , Kleinpaschleben , Libbesdorf , Micheln , Osternienburg , Reppichau , Trinum and Wulfen merged to form a single municipality of Osternienburger Land. At the same time, the administrative community Osternienburg , to which these communities belonged, was dissolved.

coat of arms

Blazon : "In blue three silver stakes covered with an upwardly angled center cross bar 2: 1."

Zabitz consists of three districts: Maxdorf, Thurau and Zabitz. The knightly family of the von Thurow family lived in these places, and they shaped the place and the region for generations. The municipal council decided on April 18, 2006 to use the coat of arms of the extinct von Thurow family as the municipal coat of arms.

The coat of arms was designed in 2006 by the municipal heraldist Jörg Mantzsch .

Even in the past centuries, heraldists were not quite clear what the three "forks" in Thurow's coat of arms mean. In view of the early evidence of the insignia, Mantzsch takes the view that they are symbols that have arisen from former house signs or district signs . In the early Anhalt land nobility there are several 2: 1 coats of arms, whose assignment can only be assumed today (e.g. County Brehna ), because they date from a time long before the emergence of heraldic terminology .

flag

The flag of the former municipality of Zabitz is white and blue (1: 1) striped (longitudinal shape: stripes running vertically, transverse shape: stripes running horizontally). The municipality's coat of arms is placed in the middle of the flag.
