Village church in Merzien

Merzien with the districts of Zehringen and Hohsdorf (both incorporated on July 1, 1950) was a formerly independent municipality in Saxony-Anhalt , which was incorporated into the city of Köthen on August 8, 1994 . Despite the incorporation, the three districts still have their own local mayor, Adolf Tauer .

geography

Merzien is about 4 km east of Köthen in a lowland surrounded by small forests and borders on the neighboring communities Großbadegast , Reupzig and Quellendorf . Zehringen is to the north and Hohsdorf to the east of Merzien. The three districts cover an area of 10.08 km² with 823 inhabitants (as of 2005).

The Ziethe stream flows between Merzien and Zehringen . There is a pond biotope in the northern part of the village of Merzien, called the water town since ancient times .

history

Sometimes Merzien used to be written as Merzin , Mercin , Märzin , Martzin or "Matzin".

The estate of the Lords von Schlegel used to be in the village, which was originally merged from four estates. Prince Karl Georg Lebrecht von Anhalt-Köthen acquired the estate, as well as the one in Zehringen, in 1783 and converted it into a ducal domain with a sheep farm. The then famous electric sheep farm from Karith near Magdeburg was established there in 1831 . In the same year, the Grüneberg'sche educational institution for sons of educated parents moved from Schortewitz to the former Merziener coffee house. This came from the time around 1800, when Merzien was a popular excursion destination for the people of Köthen due to its pleasant location in the otherwise woodless and agricultural landscape.

On July 1, 1950, the previously independent communities of Hohsdorf and Zehringen were incorporated.

memorial

The grave of an unknown Pole who was abducted to Germany during the Second World War and a victim of forced labor is located in the local cemetery .

Buildings

The village church on the former cemetery was rebuilt in 1899 in simple neo-Romanesque forms with a rectangular choir and a bell tower attached to the side. The pointed spire of the church tower was removed in the 1980s because it was dilapidated, but was added again during the extensive renovation in 1999. Worth mentioning are the two bronze bells from the 13th century, which have been preserved from the previous building. In the park next to the church there is an old, listed Slavic rampart .

On the outskirts of Merzien, two post mills from the 19th century have been preserved, but their frames have been rebuilt and their wings are missing.

While the mansion of the former ducal estate in Merzien was demolished during the GDR , the one in Zehringen has been preserved and now houses the "Julienhof" nursing home . The farm buildings of the Merziener Gut are still preserved.
