former open-cast lignite mine |
The Raßnitzer See is an anthropogenic lake in Saxony-Anhalt . It was created as a post-mining landscape in the area of the community of Schkopau in the district of Saalekreis between the localities of Raßnitz and Zöschen .
General
The Raßnitzer See is in the immediate vicinity of the Wallendorfer See . Both bodies of water were created as a post-mining landscape after the cessation of lignite mining of the remaining holes of the opencast mine Merseburg-Ost (1991).
The flooding took place with water from the neighboring White Elster . The water level is regulated by an overflow into the Wallendorfer See. Most of the restoration was completed in 1998, but the lake remained under mining law at least in 2018 , as necessary safety measures still need to be taken on the waters.
On the banks of the Raßnitz lake there is a 15 meter high observation tower built in 1996 .
