David Birney

David Edwin Birney (born April 23, 1939 in Washington, DC ) is an American actor .

Life

Birney graduated from the University of California at Los Angeles with a Master of Arts degree in theater studies . During the Vietnam War he was drafted into the United States Army , where he was assigned to a special unit for the entertainment of the soldiers. After his discharge from military service, he first played at the Virginia State Theater in the mid-1960s before moving to New York City and performing off-Broadway there . In 1969 he made his Broadway debut in The Miser , where he appeared in various productions until 1971, including as Haimon in the drama Antigone after Sophocles .

Since 1967 Birney had guest roles in various television series , in 1972 he received the lead role in the sitcom Bridget and Bernie alongside Meredith Baxter , whom he married two years later. The series was discontinued after a season of 24 episodes. In 1976 he played in on the eponymous movie Serpico the role of police officers based series Frank Serpico , in the original film by Al Pacino was presented. In the first season of the doctor series Chief Physician Dr. Westphall he played Dr. Ben Samuels , however, left this in favor of the lead role in the series Glitter , which was discontinued after 14 episodes. As a result, he was mostly seen in guest roles.

His marriage to Meredith Baxter, which was divorced in 1990, had three children.
