The name of the place is of Slavic origin and could have been Gostalici or Gostolici in Slavic . Possibly the name goes back to a person's name.

It was first mentioned in a document in 1318 as Ghustelitze . At that time, 13 hook-hooves of controllable fields belonged to the place together with Rovenhagen . From the 15th to the 18th century the place was owned by the von Scheelen family . In 1577 there were two farms with one and a half and one land hoof controllable fields and two cottages . For 1695, a farm belonging to Erich von Bohlen and also inhabited by him, two Kossaten estates and a granny house are mentioned.

Around 1700 the place was temporarily owned by the von Bohlen family . In the 18th century it went to the von Platen family , and in 1785 it was sold to the von Putbus house . A brick factory was built in the 18th century . Between 1810 and 1820 a house colony was created. In 1841, however, only one inhabited house and a total of 15 residents were found.

In 1896 the route of the Rügen small railway from Altefähr to Putbus was opened . Güstelitz was a stop on this route until the end of the train service in the 1960s. Parts of the former route are now used as cycling and hiking trails.

At the end of the 20th / beginning of the 21st century, various new residential buildings were built in Neu Güstelitz.
