Bohlen (noble family)
Bohlen is the name of an old, originally Rügischen noble family with the parent company Bolendorp on the Wittow peninsula .
The family is not to be confused with that of Bohlen and Halbach , since there is no regular relationship with them .
history
It remains uncertain whether the family has its origins in Cologne or is to be regarded as a descendant of the Rügen prince Tezlaw . In any case, the family has its historically tangible origin on the Rügen Wittow peninsula .
The presence of the family in Bohlendorf on Rügen can be proven in the tithe registers of the Roskilde monastery as early as 1300 . With Nicolaus Bohlen, the family first appeared in a document on February 5, 1236. The Knappe Powl Bolen is mentioned in a document in 1316.
In the 14th century, the family appeared in the four tribes Presenske, Bohlendorf, Kassnevitz (†) and Wostevitz (†). All living relatives are descended from Henning zu Schlavekevitz (1497) and Vicke zu Presenske (1577).
The Bohlen family provided a bailiff of Rügen three times .
In 1711 August the Strong raised the colonel and imperial vicar Ernst Heinrich von Bohlen from the line of Henning to the rank of baron . In 1745 the Swedish chamberlain Carl Heinrich Behrend von Bohlen was raised from the line of Vicke to the rank of count .
By marrying Maria Lucretia von Normann , the von Bohlen family came into possession of the Gnatzkow estate near Greifswald in 1679. Carl Heinrich Behrend von Bohlen (1705–1757) began building the new Karlsburg Palace in 1731 , which was completed in 1739.
Through his son, the imperial count Carl Julius Bernhard von Bohlen (1738–1813), the estate and place Gnatzkow came when the Swedish King Gustav III visited. 1771 to the name Karlsburg , according to his first name.
His granddaughter Caroline von Bohlen (1798–1858) was the last heir to this line and married the Prussian Lieutenant General Theodor von Bismarck (1790–1873), whereby ownership and name, according to Bohlen's will, passed to the Count von Bismarck-Bohlen , who lived in Karlsburg until 1945 .
coat of arms
The family coat of arms shows an open red wall gable in silver with a right-facing red griffin growing from it . On the helmet with red and silver covers, a crumpled, natural tree trunk framed by two forward-looking red griffins.
The baronial coat of arms from 1863 shows shield and helmet like the family coat of arms, as shield holders two red griffins, each with a blue shield with two silver plowshares on each chest, each holding a red and silver divided standard. Motto: "CAVE GRYPHEM"
