Tezlaw

Tezlaw , also Tetzlaw , Tetislaw (* before 1163 ; † between 1170 and 1181 ) was a prince of Rügen .

Life

According to the Pomeranian chronicler Thomas Kantzow , he was a son of the ranic king Ratislaus of Rügen (1105–1140). Even before Tezlaw was first mentioned by Saxo Grammaticus for the year 1164 as King of Rügen , the Ranen were the target of several campaigns by the Danish King Waldemar I and the Saxon Duke Henry the Lion . Tezlaw and his co-ruling brother Jaromar had to recognize the feudal sovereignty of the respective conqueror several times, including by participating in a campaign by Waldemar against Wolgast in 1162 and in 1163 at the inauguration of Lübeck Cathedral against Henry the Lion.

After the Danes under Waldemar I and Bishop Absalon von Roskilde conquered the Jaromarsburg in 1168 , Tezlaw and Jaromar handed over their headquarters and temple to Charenza after negotiations without a fight. By recognizing the suzerainty of the Danish king and adopting Christianity, they secured rule over Rügen. This happened in particular through the disempowerment of the Swantewit priests, who had previously stood in respect of the secular rulers. From now on Tezlaw carried the title of Prince of Rügen . As vassals of the Danes, the Ranen soon took part again in campaigns against the Pomerania, including the siege of Stettin by Waldemar I in 1170.

Tezlaw is mentioned for the last time in written sources for 1170. In 1181 his brother Jaromar I was the sole prince of Rügen. The Tetzlawstraße in Stralsund is named after him.

Remarks

  1. Whether Tezlaw and his presumed son Dubislaw withdrew to Wittow and founded the families of von Bohlen or von der Lancken who lived there, is not documented.
