Fortress wall near Venz - according to recent research the historical Charenza

Charenza is the name of a Slavic rampart on the island of Rügen .

location

Until now it was considered certain that the castle wall near Garz (geographical location: 54 ° 18 ′ 51 ″  N , 13 ° 20 ′ 50 ″  E ) was the location of the Charenza described in the writings of Saxo Grammaticus and Helmold von Bosau . According to a new hypothesis, however, Charenza is to be equated with the castle wall near Venz in the municipality of Trent (Rügen) (geographical location: 54 ° 30 ′ 7 ″  N , 13 ° 19 ′ 0 ″  E ). This is justified u. a. with the different meanings of the names Garz ("small castle") and Charenza. Furthermore, the proximity to Cape Arkona fits better with the times in the “ Gesta Danorum ” of the Saxo Grammaticus. In the 14th century, a place called Gharense was mentioned in the parish of Gingst .

Surname

The name Charenza (also Karentia , Karenz ) should be derived from the personal name "Chareta". Another thesis is based on the word "Koreta", which means root in German .
