Landing of the Brandenburgers in front of Neukamp 1678

The name of the place goes back to the Slavic Kapa and is interpreted as a raised place in the marshland, an island overgrown with bushes . The sale of a pension from Neukamp is recorded for the year 1336. It was sold to an Engelbert by the brothers Johannes and Thetz von Putbus . As early as 1337 some of it passed to the priest Amelang. Amelang was chaplain of the Vilmer Chapel on the island of Vilm in the Bodden near Neukamp . In 1358 Amelung bought three cottages in the village.

On September 13 and 14, 1678 there was a major landing operation of Brandenburg troops at Neukamp , which was directed against the Swedes holding Rügen , at the same time the allied Danes landed in the west of the island. To the south of Neukamp, the Swedes had built a hill for defense . However, the Brandenburg landing company was successful after two days of fighting. The Swedish troops under Königsmark fled towards the entrenchments at Altefähr or were taken prisoner.

On October 15, 1854, one of the so-called Prussian columns was erected on the site of the landing to commemorate the event . On the column is the figure of the Great Elector Friedrich Wilhelm of Brandenburg. However, the column had to be dismantled in 1990 because it showed considerable damage due to corrosion of the connecting steel and weathering of the stone drums and threatened to collapse. After unsuccessful restoration attempts, it was stored in Putbus for years. Then finally the column was restored and rebuilt in 2012.

Probably during the 18th / 19th centuries. Century changed the character of the village. The houses of fishermen and Büdners took the place of the rural Kossatenstellen .

In the time of the GDR there was a holiday camp of the Salbke Reichsbahn repair shop south of the locality .

Sightseeing and economy

  • One of the two Prussian columns , which is also entered in the monument register, is located south of the village, not far from the ski jump and the former landing point of the Brandenburgers near Neukamp .
  • At the northern entrance to Wreechen, near the bridge to Wreechen, is the “Nautilus” restaurant, the interior of which is based on the fictional submarine Nautilus from the novel 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea .
