John Nyman

John Emanuel Nyman (born April 25, 1908 in Sundsvall , † October 19, 1977 there ) was a Swedish wrestler . At the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin , he won the silver medal in the Greco-Roman heavyweight division.

Career

John Nyman matured at the wrestling club Sundsvalls AIK , to which he belonged throughout his career, in the early 1930s to an outstanding heavyweight wrestler in the Greco-Roman style. From 1931 he achieved some excellent placings at the Swedish championships and always achieved good results at the major international wrestling tournaments that were common in Scandinavia at the time. Until 1934 he was still in the shadow of the "old fighters" Carl Westergreen and Rudolf Svensson and the Swedish champion from 1931 Georg Nilsson.

In 1935 he was the first Swedish heavyweight champion in the Greco-Roman style. From this point on, he was also used in the major international championships and achieved consistently excellent results. In 1936 he won the silver medal at the Olympic Games in Berlin. The Estonian Kristjan Palusalu , who defeated him on points, blocked his way to the gold medal . In 1937, 1938 and 1939 John Nyman finished 2nd at the European Championships in Greco-Roman style in Paris, Tallinn and Oslo. In 1937 he lost the decisive fight for the title against Kristjan Palusalu and in 1938 and 1939 against Johannes Kotkas from Estonia .
