Gerhard Himmel (born May 12, 1965 in Hanau ) is a former German wrestler .
Career
Gerhard Himmel grew up in Großkrotzenburg and started wrestling as a teenager at SRV Großkrotzenburg. In 1983 he was German youth champion and in 1983, 1984 also German junior champion in the Greco-Roman style. At the Junior World Championships in 1983 he took an excellent 2nd place in the class up to 87 kg body weight and was on his way to becoming a world class wrestler when he was seriously injured in a car accident in 1985 and had to interrupt his wrestling career. After his recovery he was only able to intervene in wrestling events again in 1986. In the meantime he fought for Einigkeit Aschaffenburg-Damm and then for AC Bavaria Goldbach . He made the leap to the top of the world in 1988. He won an Olympic silver medal in the heavyweight division and was even world champion in 1989. In 1990 Gerhard Himmel ended his international wrestling career at the age of 25 because of his studies. For winning the silver medal at the 1988 Olympic Games, he was awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf.
His studies in business administration led him a. a. also to Switzerland (University of St. Gallen) and the USA (University of Iowa). He successfully completed this, received his doctorate (Dr.oec.) And started his professional career at a German chemical company. At the beginning of 2004 he founded his own company with the business areas China consulting (www.china-competence.biz) and company health promotion (www.coheso.de).
