The Schadowstraße underground station (also known as the Jan-Wellem-Platz underground station in the planning phase ) is a station on the Düsseldorf city railway . It lies in the course of the third main line, the Wehrhahn Line , in the city center of the North Rhine-Westphalian state capital Düsseldorf . The preparatory work for construction of the new subway station began on May 5th 2008, it was for the shell, the cover design as a construction method used. The opening took place on February 20, 2016.
location
The underground station was built in a central location in downtown Düsseldorf. The structure follows the course of Schadowstrasse , which is one of the most important shopping streets in Düsseldorf. At its western end, it crosses under Berliner Allee , which, along with the Rheinufertunnel, is the most important north-south connection through Düsseldorf city center. This is also where the western part of Schadowstrasse joins, which connects to Königsallee through the adjacent Peek & Cloppenburg department store and the Schadow-Arkaden shopping center . To the north-east is Jan-Wellem-Platz , which was redesigned as part of the Kö-Bogen urban development project . To the north of the underground station is Gustaf-Gründgens-Platz , with the neighboring Dreischeibenhaus and Schauspielhaus . To the east, the further course of Schadowstrasse leads to three large department stores in the Karstadt , Galeria Kaufhof and C&A chains . In the south, Berliner Allee leads to the headquarters of the Düsseldorf Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Düsseldorf Stock Exchange .
history
In the course of the planning for the Wehrhahn Line, the station was originally planned further to the west, accordingly it was to be named Jan-Wellem-Platz to make it clearer to change to the north-south tram lines. In the course of the planning, there were protests by the department stores in the Schadowstrasse / Tonhallenstrasse area, who wanted to see today's tram stop on Schadowstrasse at its current location as an underground station. However, this was deleted from the plans due to savings for the construction work. The Schadowstraße underground station described here and the following Pempelforter Straße underground station are now to take over its tasks.
The completed name change can be seen in connection with the Kö-Bogen project. The former junction in Düsseldorf's local traffic for trams and buses , Jan-Wellem-Platz , has already lost this role with the opening of the first trunk line of the light rail. Due to the development of the square and the previous traffic area , a de-dedication of the square is to be expected.
Station complex
There are three stair entrances and an elevator system along Schadowstrasse. In the western area, a wide staircase , supplemented by two escalators , leads to a distribution level . There the elevator located further east and further stairs lead to the 4.50 meter wide and 90 meter long side platforms .
In the eastern area, two entrances were built, also connected by a common distribution level. These establish the connection on the north side of Schadowstrasse / corner of Bleichstrasse with stairs and on the south side on Wagnerstrasse with escalators.
A design competition was held in advance for the design of the Wehrhahn Line subway stations. The Schadowstraße underground station was designed by the artist Ursula Damm . One focus of this design is the connection between the surface and the underground train station. With the help of a video installation , what is happening on the surface is projected onto a glass surface in the underground station via a light shaft. This projection is changed beforehand by an intermediate analysis.
In connection with the Kö-Bogen project, extensive road tunnels were built in the area of today's Jan-Wellem-Platz. The south-north tunnel of this system crosses the tunnel of the Wehrhahn Line in the area of the Schadowstraße underground station at a free height.
traffic
The Schadowstraße underground station is on the third trunk line of the Düsseldorf light rail network. Since the opening of the tunnel and the completion of the Kö-Bogen, the tram lines at Jan-Wellem-Platz have also changed. The tram stop was renamed from Jan-Wellem-Platz to U-Schadowstraße, so that the Jan-Wellem-Platz stop no longer exists. Since February 21, 2016, all four lines operating on this route have been serving the station. In addition to the transfer options between the individual tram lines, there are other transfer connections to three tram lines. In addition, it was integrated into the Düsseldorf local transport network.
The neighboring city and the north-eastern districts of Rath and Grafenberg can be reached via the line from Ratingen . The line branching off at the level of the employment agency connects the Gerresheim district . In the direction of the old town there is a connection to the Heinrich-Heine-Allee transfer point . In addition, the districts of Bilk , Volmerswerth , Wersten , Holthausen and Benrath located to the south and south-east are connected.
All light rail lines that run here are operated by the Düsseldorf Rheinbahn with low-floor light rail vehicles of the type NF8U .
