Martinskirche

The Catholic Martinskirche , also called Bilker Church , is located in Düsseldorf-Unterbilk and is the parish church of the parish of St. Martin , which belongs to the pastoral care area Unter- and Oberbilk, Friedrichstadt and Eller-West. The building, which was blown up during the war, was stylistically related to the Suitbertus Church.

history

The parish of St. Martin is the oldest in Bilk, whose parish church was Alt St. Martin until the beginning of the 19th century . The Loreto Chapel at the intersection of Bilker Allee and Lorettostraße became the new Bilk parish church after the old Martinskirche had become dilapidated in 1812. In 1893 this church too became too small, so that it was torn down and replaced by a new building. It was built from 1894 to 1896 in neo-Gothic style based on designs by the architect Alfred Tepe from Driebergen near Utrecht . The spire was turned off by a hurricane in 1924 and fell into a residential building. In 1943 the Bilker church was badly damaged. In March 1945, shortly before the end of the war, the "Bilker Dom" was blown up by German troops for no apparent reason. Today's Bilker Church was built from 1951 to 1952 with an old floor plan, again as a basilica according to plans by the architects “ A. & W. Dickmann ”.

architecture

The neo-Gothic church was a three-aisled hall church with a transept and free polygonal closed choirs. The floor plan was in the shape of a triangle. The side choirs were joined by the sacristy and the baptistery and thus formed the western end of the building complex. A large square bell tower dominated the building complex. The lay room was 850 m² and offered space for 2500 visitors. Bricks were used as building material. Cornices and tracery were made with sandstone.
