The inner city tunnel is a continuous four-track subway tunnel of the Düsseldorf Stadtbahn underneath Düsseldorf city center . In the middle part it is designed on two levels. It is part of the trunk lines 1 and 2 .

The two trunk lines 1 and 2 from Duisburg / Stockum and Krefeld / Neuss converge around the height of Ratinger Tor , under Heinrich-Heine-Allee . On the north side of the four-track underground station Heinrich-Heine-Allee there is a double-track turning system. The tunnel then runs under the Wilhelm-Marx-Haus and under the Königsallee . The Steinstraße / Königsallee underground station is located under Steinstraße, between the intersections with Königsallee and Berliner Allee . Like the entire tunnel between Heinrich-Heine-Allee and the main train station, this station is two-story. The two upper tracks are used by the tram lines in the direction of Heinrich-Heine-Allee and the lower ones in the direction of the main station. This is followed by Oststraße station . It is located under Friedrich-Ebert-Straße between the intersections with Oststraße and Charlottenstraße. Behind this station, both tunnel levels are brought together again and lead to the four-track Hauptbahnhof underground station. After this station, the two trunk lines separate again. While route 1 takes the U74, U77 and U79 lines to Holthausen or Universität Ost, route 2, which is served by the U75 and U76 lines, reaches the Handelszentrum / Moskauer Straße or Eller subway station . There is a four-track underground turning system on the east side of the Hauptbahnhof underground station.
