The Heinrich-Heine-Allee underground station is next to the main train station the most important station of the Düsseldorf light rail and the only one where all Düsseldorf light rail lines stop. It is a tower railway station and is located on the first , second and third trunk line in the city center of the North Rhine-Westphalian state capital Düsseldorf . The second basement of the underground station built under Heinrich-Heine-Allee was opened to traffic in 1988 and has since opened up the Flinger and Bolkerstraße shopping streets . The third basement floor was opened to traffic on February 20, 2016. Thanks to the connection to the above-ground bus stops of the same name, the Heinrich-Heine-Allee underground station is also one of the most important transfer points in Düsseldorf. Trams no longer run there.

location

Location in the city area

In the area north of the Heinrich-Heine-Allee underground station, the first and second trunk line will be merged, both of which will be crossed by the third trunk line ( Wehrhahn Line ) within the subway station without any elevation . After passing the Nordstrasse underground station , the first leads under the Hofgarten and under the tunnel of the second trunk line. After crossing the Rhine over the Oberkasseler Bridge and stopping at the Tonhalle / Ehrenhof underground station at the level of the Ratinger Tor, this leads into the tunnel.

After stopping at the Heinrich-Heine-Allee underground station, the inner city tunnel of the Düsseldorf Stadtbahn (first and second trunk line only) leads from here in an arch under the Königsallee to the Steinstraße / Königsallee underground station below Steinstraße . The tunnel is then followed by further course of the road Steinstrasse direction central station to the subway station East Road .

The third main line, the so-called Wehrhahn Line , runs from east to south through the subway station and follows the course of Schadowstraße in an easterly direction and, after crossing the Schadowstraße and Pempelforter Straße subway stations, leads in a ramp in the area of the S-Bahn station Düsseldorf Wehrhahn back to daylight. From there it reaches the eastern districts of Düsseldorf and the neighboring city of Ratingen . In a southerly direction it follows the course of the two one-way streets Kasernenstraße (south of Graf-Adolf-Platz : Friedrichstraße) and Breite Straße (south of Graf-Adolf-Platz: Elisabethstraße) after crossing the underground stations Benrather Straße , Graf-Adolf-Platz and Kirchplatz to the Düsseldorf-Bilk S-Bahn station , where it is brought back to the surface north of the S-Bahn station at the Düsseldorf Arcaden and continues in a southerly direction.

The station itself is located at the interface between the old town and the expanded city center. For a long time Heinrich-Heine-Allee was the outermost limit of the city. Today, the underground station is the central point of access for local public transport for the old town and the numerous restaurants represented there. The department stores Carsch-Haus and Galeria Kaufhof are directly connected to the underground station .

history

On February 1, 1979, work began on the construction of the subway station. The station was intended as a crossing and branching station with two central platforms with a usable length of 120 m each. As it was assumed in the planning phase that the route would be operated as a full underground system, an operating length of 120 m was implemented. This length was not taken into account in the further expansion of the light rail network and only underground stations with a platform length of 90 m were built. In contrast to the other stations in the inner city tunnel, Steinstrasse / Königsallee and Oststrasse, the tracks were built parallel and therefore not on two levels of travel, one above the other. The current track position enables a quick and smooth transfer and reach the old town and the city center. Like the Klever Strasse and Nordstrasse subway stations, the station was built at a depth of one and a half times.

Before the Wehrhahn Line went into operation on February 20, 2016, the Heinrich-Heine-Allee underground station was an important transfer point between Düsseldorf light rail and tram . When it went into operation, it lost this function, as the above-ground tram lines from east to west / south-west were replaced by the tram lines of the Wehrhahn line and the tram lines from north to south are now routed over Berliner Allee . Since then, the connection points between the light rail and the tram have been the two neighboring underground stations Steinstrasse / Königsallee (first and second trunk line) and Schadowstrasse (third trunk line). Since the Wehrhahn Line went into operation, however, it has been the only station on the Düsseldorf Stadtbahn that is served by all Stadtbahn lines.

Station complex

The station consists of several levels. The upper level (−1) is the distribution level and houses numerous shops, it also contains direct entrances to the two large adjacent department stores and to the lower-lying platforms. The second level (−2) has two central platforms where the lines to the main train station or Krefeld , Neuss and Duisburg stop. Below this is a third level (−3), which was originally built as a preliminary service for the Wehrhahn Line , and was completed and opened on February 20, 2016 as a complete underground station. It has a central platform.

The entrances to the underground station are on Bolkerstrasse, Flinger Strasse, Heinrich-Heine-Allee, Theodor-Körner-Strasse and at Kaufhof . There are escalators at most entrances .

The outer platforms of the −2 level of the underground station (tracks 3 and 4) lead in the direction of the Hofgarten ramp to the Tonhalle / Ehrenhof underground station . This track is used by the U70, U74, U75, U76 and U77 lines. The inner platforms (tracks 1 and 2) are used by the trains in the direction of the northern line. The underground lines U78 and U79 serve these two platforms. The platforms on the −3 level (tracks 5 and 6) are used by the U71, U72, U73 and U83 lines.

layout

One of the works of art in the subway station

A special feature of the Heinrich-Heine-Allee underground station is that an art project by the city of Düsseldorf was realized here in 1988 on two of its levels. Eight painters were commissioned to each produce a large picture measuring 400 cm × 300 cm for this subway station. You should react in your pictures to the surroundings of the subway station. The eight artists were Fernand Roda, Adolphe Lechtenberg , Tina Juretzek , Holger Bunk , Herbert Bardenheuer , Bertram Jesdinsky , Julia Lohmann and Martinaissenbeck. At the same time, the Düsseldorf artist Peter Royen sen. the order for a wall relief on the −1 level. It is made of Belgian granite and is 300 cm × 1300 cm in size. The other eight murals are on level two of the subway station. All of these works were documented in a catalog published in 1988 by the City of Düsseldorf's Department of Culture. The continuation of the inclusion of contemporary art can be seen in the extension of the Wehrhahn Line in 2016. Since September 2016, the new ArcheoPoint with parts of the walls of the Düsseldorf city fortifications in the area of the train station has been open to the public.

First floor

The −1 level houses the Heinrich-Heine-Galerie, which was rebuilt in the early 2000s. This has its predecessor in the Flingerpassage and the Bolkerpassage. These were also equipped with several shops until the renovation, but formed two separate rooms due to a spatial separation, caused by the centrally placed toilet facilities. After the renovation, a central and wide crossing was created over the entire length of the passage. This is supported by all-over ceiling lighting above this axis. The shops with different uses are based on this. There are several service companies and shops for daily needs. In addition, the adjacent department stores, Galeria Kaufhof and Carsch-Haus have each set up spacious entrance areas on this level.

second level

There are four platforms on the −2 level, each of which is combined to form two central platforms. The trains on both main lines stop at these in the same direction of travel. This makes it easier to change between the lines that separate again in the area behind the Heinrich-Heine-Allee underground station.

The Düsseldorf subway stations of the first, second and third generation all have almost the same design. The ceilings, like the floor area, are kept dark. A metal cladding encompasses the pillars in the middle of the platform, and the rest of the station furniture is silver. The beige walls provide a contrast to this restrained color scheme. The stop names are affixed above the information boards with black writing on a white background, on the walls they are in black writing on a white background, accompanied by wine-red lines above and below the writing.

To the north of the platform area is a double-track sweeping system . At the southern end of the station there is a central sweeping track that was originally intended as a connecting track to the Wehrhahnlinie. The construction of this connecting track is no longer necessary because - due to the design of the Wehrhahnlinien tunnel as a low-floor urban railway for the NF8U wagon type - it would not be of any great operational benefit and therefore would not justify the necessary construction investments.

Third level

Third level, platform towards Benrath

The −3 level has taken on the third main line, the so-called Wehrhahn Line , since February 20, 2016 . The stop at Heinrich-Heine-Allee underground station along the Wehrhahn Line is the only station with a central platform, while side platforms are used for all other underground stations. This has its origin in the construction method used: The tunnels were created with a shield driving machine. The resulting tunnel is laid out on two tracks and does not offer enough space between the tunnels for the widening required for central platforms. Since the Heinrich-Heine-Allee underground station was planned and built as a preliminary construction work in the 1980s, the tunnel ends at the previously constructed nozzle south of the station and is resumed to the east.

The platform begins west below the Galeria Kaufhof and extends to the east side of Königsallee, near Corneliusplatz. The platform is approx. 90 meters long and 8.8 meters wide. The entrances to the platform area are divided into three areas. At the eastern end of the platform, an escalator leads to a mezzanine. From here the Königsallee is directly connected to the third level via two staircases. In the middle of the platform, another escalator and a lift reach the first level, the Heinrich-Heine-Galerie. The platform area was given a third access to enable direct transfers between the light rail lines. This leads from the western end via escalators and fixed staircases to the two platforms on the second level.

A design competition was held in advance for the design of the Wehrhahn Line subway stations. Graduates of the Düsseldorf Art Academy were selected for the subway stations on the Wehrhahn Line. Ralf Brög designed the newly built extension of the Heinrich-Heine-Allee underground station under the motto: Three model rooms.

traffic

The Heinrich-Heine-Allee underground station is located on the first, second and third trunk line of the Düsseldorf light rail network. All eleven lines operating on these routes serve the station. In addition to the transfer options between the individual tram lines, there are transfer relationships to four bus lines that stop at stops on the surface along Heinrich-Heine-Allee.

The neighboring cities on the left bank of the Rhine and the districts of Lörick , Heerdt and Oberkassel can be reached via the express line from Krefeld and the other supplementary lines from Meerbusch and Neuss . The neighboring city and the northern districts of Wittlaer , Kaiserswerth and Lohausen can be reached via the line from Duisburg . The line branching off in Stockum to the ESPRIT arena connects this as well as the Düsseldorf exhibition center . Behind the Düsseldorf Hbf transfer station , which connects the Stadtbahn with the Rhein-Ruhr S-Bahn and other connections in regional and long-distance traffic, the southeastern districts of Lierenfeld , Eller , Oberbilk and Wersten are located in the further course of the first and second trunk route and Holthausen , as well as the Heinrich Heine University and the Botanical Garden . The third main line (Wehrhahn Line), which is served by the U71, U72, U73 and U83 lines, includes the eastern districts of Düsseltal , Mörsenbroich , Grafenberg , Rath and Gerresheim , as well as the neighboring town of Ratingen , and the southern districts of Bilk to the south , Volmerswerth , as well as Wersten, Holthausen and Benrath , as well as the Heinrich Heine University and the Botanical Garden . The lines U71, U72, U73 and U83 are connected to the S-Bahn Rhein-Ruhr at the S-Bahn stations Wehrhahn and Bilk .

With one exception, all light rail lines are served by the Düsseldorf Rheinbahn alone. This forms the U79 line, which is operated jointly with the Duisburger Verkehrsgesellschaft . For example, high-floor trams of the type B80C run on the U79 line operated by the Duisburger Verkehrsgesellschaft . In addition, as on the U70 and U74-U79 lines, type B80D cars, also high-floor, are used here. On the U75 line, converted GT8SU vehicles from GT8S trams also run. NF8U low-floor railcars operate on the U71, U72, U73 and U83 light rail lines .

Planning

The planning approval procedure for trunk line 5 , on which the U82 is to travel from Düsseldorf Hbf via Heinrich-Heine-Allee and Freiligrathplatz to Düsseldorf Airport , has been running since September 2015 . A new bridge is to be built from Freiligrathplatz over the Nordstern and then a tunnel to the airport terminal with an underground station there. The city plans to start construction in late 2019 [obsolete] and commissioning in 2024 Template: future / in 4 years. This line is also supposed to stop at Heinrich-Heine-Allee underground station.

In the local transport plan 2002–2007 of the state capital Düsseldorf, the introduction of a new light rail line U80 is planned. For this, the construction of a bypass of the Düsseldorf exhibition center with a new underground station Messe-Süd is necessary. If this measure is to be implemented, the Heinrich-Heine-Allee underground station is intended as a stop on this line.
