Life

Tina Juretzek spends the first six years of her life in Thale, in the Harz region. Her mother was a sculptor, her father a merchant. The interest in art and literature can already be seen in her great-grandmother, who was a writer, and in her grandmother, who was also a painter. In 1958 the family fled the former GDR and moved to Essen. After graduating from high school in 1971, Juretzek began studying with Günter Grote at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . At the same time she studies art history with Heinrich Theissing, Werner Spies and Walter Jürgen Hofmann. She deals intensively with the paintings of Jan Vermeer , Francisco de Goya , Henri Matisse and James Ensor . In 1972 she began studying geography at the same time at the University of Düsseldorf. She places the focus of her thematic discussion in the area of physical geography (the origin of the surface design of the earth). Her works, which she will be producing with Japanese paper from 1991 onwards, reflect this focus in terms of their materiality and landscape themes.

Tina Juretzek has been working as a freelance painter in Düsseldorf since 1979. Her work is exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions in galleries and museums. Her long-term, intensive collaboration with the Elke and Werner Zimmer gallery in Düsseldorf, which devoted several solo exhibitions to the artist at a very early stage and continued this until the gallery work ended in 2000, is particularly important. Juretzek's work is continuously represented at various art fairs in several galleries.

Travel is of vital importance for the artist's work. (India, USSR, Japan, South America, USA) In 1983 she made a trip to the Aeolian Islands with a stay on the active Stromboli volcano , which inspired her to create an extensive group of works. Her ink drawings in particular, which shape her work to this day, begin after this journey. In 1985 she took a trip on the Trans-Siberian Railway. The long journey of 8,530 kilometers from Moscow to Khabarovsk is later reflected in the work groups: “World Landscapes”, “Nocturnal Travel”, as well as in the discussion of the subject of “Wheel and Rail”, which inspire her to work on extremely long friezes. In 2004 she travels to the south of England and visits places like Stonehenge, which will shape her later work in series like “Uralte Orte” (Holy Mountains and Places of Power).

In 1999 and 2000 Juretzek's work was shown in a retrospective exhibition tour through the Pfalzgalerie Kaiserslautern, the Märkisches Museum Witten, the Heidelberger Kunstverein, the Städtische Galerie Gladbeck and the Städtisches Museum Mülheim an der Ruhr.

In 2010, after 26 years, she gave up her studio in Düsseldorf-Mitte to move into a new studio on the outskirts of Düsseldorf.

Tina Juretzek's works are characterized by abstraction in the area of figuration and landscape. The representational always remains perceptible even with strong abstraction. This is how the first large figure paintings emerged in the 1980s, the main theme of which was the relationship between the human figure and space. Later vessels are used as a metaphor for people and the motif of the source is used as a symbol of life. In these often large-format works, the artist deals with the medium of the painting collage for the first time.

A Journey to Japan (1991) introduces a new group of works by examining the medium of Japanese paper. The artist turns to the theme of the landscape. Painting collages are created with Japanese paper on canvas. In these pictures, which are characterized by inner experience and landscape associations, she puts the themes of color, light and space in a new relationship, thereby crossing the boundaries of informal painting.

The third group of works are Juretzek's extensive thematic series of drawings. A trip to the Aeolian Islands in the early 1980s triggers the engagement with the medium of ink drawing, which has continued to this day. (Stromboli, Lilith, Barriere-Landschaft et al.) In addition, numerous public commissioned works such as the world travel frieze from 1988 with a length of 24 meters in the Federal Office Cologne-Chorweiler.
