Ulrich Krempel (born November 26, 1948 in Rheine ) is a German art historian , curator and museum director.

Life

Ulrich Krempel was born in Rheine and grew up in Bochum , where he studied German, art history, philosophy and journalism after finishing school at the Ruhr University . During this time he also stayed in Rome for study purposes. In 1975, he was with a thesis on political art in Russia in the 20th century doctorate . From 1977 to 1980, Krempel held various teaching positions in Duisburg, Osnabrück, Essen and Kassel.

In 1980 he became a curator at the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf . In 1986 he moved to the Museum Folkwang in Essen, where he headed the exhibition department. In 1988 he moved to the North Rhine-Westphalia Art Collection in Düsseldorf in the same position . From here he went to Hanover in November 1993, where he worked as director of the Sprengel Museum until his retirement on January 31, 2014 . In 2005, Krempel was one of the founders of the Leipziger Kreis , an association of directors of German art museums.

Ulrich Krempel is honorary professor at the University of Fine Arts Braunschweig and was visiting professor at the University of Paris IV-Sorbonne .
