The Duisburg Hauptbahnhof underground station is an underground station in the urban district of Duisburg . It is part of the Duisburg Stadtbahn network and is located in a tunnel with direct access to Duisburg Central Station . The underground station belongs to the Duisburger Verkehrsgesellschaft (DVG).
history
With the new construction of today's Duisburg main station , the tram connection was fundamentally redesigned. Until then, the Inselbahnhof , built in 1886, was connected to the north by Königstrasse and Mülheimer Strasse, and for the lines ending at the main station there was a turning loop on the slightly rising station forecourt.
The new station building from 1934 has since been located in the axis of Friedrich-Wilhelm-Straße and Kammerstraße and thus 500 meters south of the trams that continue to run on Königstraße and Mülheimer Straße. Apart from the Neudorf tram lines, which stopped at the east entrance until 1992, there was no direct transfer option. The station forecourt at the main entrance was therefore to a certain extent given a forerunner of today's underground station in the form of a spacious connecting zone for buses and trams on two levels. The lines ending at the main station branched off at Mülheimer Strasse and drove over a ramp to the stop below the forecourt. This was followed by a turning loop south of the forecourt.
At the time of construction it was planned to connect the underground station from the south as well, as well as to build a new crossing-free tram route to the north across the Ruhr. In 1929 the previously independent town of Hamborn was merged with Duisburg (until 1935 Duisburg-Hamborn ), but due to the Ruhrort harbor between them there were hardly any transport connections. The north-south road was then built on this route in 1963 (today federal highway 59 ).
Since 1967, DVG has been converting its existing tram network into a light rail network as part of the Rhein-Ruhr urban railway network. It began with the acceleration of the Düsseldorf-Duisburger Kleinbahn (the former "D-Bahn") in the south of Duisburg with traffic routing without intersections and high-altitude stations or as a trough structure .
The efforts of Duisburg politicians to establish Königstrasse as a pure pedestrian zone could only be achieved by leading the tram through a tunnel under the city center. The tunnel was elaborately planned with intersection-free routing in two levels, this and the high groundwater level due to the proximity to the Rhine led to a disproportionately long construction time given the length of the tunnel and to enormous costs, since the groundwater around the tunnel, which was created using the cut-and-cover method, was as high as a house Heat pumps had to be frozen.
On July 11, 1992, the Hauptbahnhof underground station was opened together with the inner city tunnel, and at the same time above-ground tram traffic at the main station was discontinued. The tram stop at the east entrance was deleted without replacement, the last line 904, which still ran through Duisburg-Neudorf, was replaced by bus line 934.
Location and facilities
The underground station is located at the eastern end of the inner city tunnel of the Duisburg light rail and connects the two Duisburg light rail lines. To the east, the ramp Mülheimer Str. And the Ruhrtunnel of the Duisburg Stadtbahn connect .
The underground station is the only Duisburg underground station, along with the König-Heinrich-Platz underground station, with four platform tracks on two central platforms arranged one above the other . These are all designed in two parts with platform heights of 26 and 90 cm, as both normal trams (lines 901 and 903) and light rail vehicles (line U 79) run here.
In contrast to the König-Heinrich-Platz underground station, which was built purely as a line service and has a double-track turning system on the lower level (line 901) , the Hauptbahnhof underground station was built in a directional operation and has a transfer point between the two different ones Light rail routes. Behind the platform ends in the direction of travel are in the tunnel routes which allow a crossing-free change of line tracks.
The station is equipped with generous distribution levels at both ends. The eastern level is designed as a pedestrian underpass under Mülheimer Strasse with several (mostly empty) shops. This is also where the Duisburg Hbf main signal box is located, which controls the line train control (LZB) in the inner city and Ruhr tunnels. Since the supply of new and spare parts for the LZB is no longer guaranteed, it will be replaced by a point train control system by 2020 . In addition, there is a substation with an installed capacity of 10,000 kVA in the operating rooms of the distribution level, which, among other things, provides the traction power supply for part of the Duisburg inner city tunnel and supplies the station with electricity.
