Bruckhausen is a district of Duisburg in the Meiderich / Beeck district . It used to belong to the Hamborn district , which was merged with the Duisburg district in 1929.

history

The district experienced its upswing in 1900 with the expansion of the Thyssen - coking -Geländes. From 1960, more and more guest workers moved to the district. The families of the immigrants followed later , gradually creating a significantly multiethnic quarter with a high proportion of Turkish descent.

With this year-long share of foreigners of over 50% (end of 2018: 54.9%), Bruckhausen was one of the first districts with this population structure. Therefore, the district serves as a model for scientists who study the development of ethnic-cultural conflicts.

The religious development of Bruckhausen corresponds with the changing population: the Protestant church on Dieselstrasse and the Catholic Church of Our Lady on Wilhelmplatz were joined by several backyard mosques and, in 2004, the first new mosque in Duisburg on Dieselstrasse.

Bruckhausen gained notoriety when the author Günter Wallraff wrote his book Entire Below (he lived temporarily in Bruckhausen). Furthermore, the crime scene commissioner Horst Schimanski played again and again in Bruckhausen and thus spread a picture of the "dingy Ruhr area ". The documentary film Rauliens Revier , which accompanies a Bruckhausen police officer at work , shows that everyday life in Bruckhausen is not very spectacular .

future

In the area of Dieselstrasse , Ottokarstrasse and Heinrichstrasse , many houses have been refurbished and the facades renovated with public funds in recent years. Up to 2015, private owners have up to 70% public funding available to renovate their buildings. Investments were also made in the public infrastructure. Examples are the culture bunker (a converted high-rise bunker) or the renovation of Wilhelmplatz. The buildings on Kaiser-Wilhelm-Straße , “Kringelkamp” and parts of the directly adjacent streets, on the other hand, were demolished between 2010 and 2015 due to above-average vacancies and sometimes poor building conditions. The Edithstraße , kringle Kamp and the western section of the Henry Street disappeared thereby completely. It was replaced by the not undisputed Duisburg-Nord green belt . At the beginning of 2013, ThyssenKrupp started to dismantle Blast Furnace 4, which started up in 1965 and has been idle since 2008. As a landmark, this has shaped the silhouette of Bruckhausen for over 35 years.
