history

In the Middle Ages , Aldenrade was a small farming community that belonged to the parish of Walsum. The current district was first mentioned in 890 under the name Aldenroda . The area retained its rural character until the effects of the industrial revolution in the late 19th century began to develop rapidly; Especially around 1900 there was a rapid increase in population in this context. Therefore, the municipality of Walsum, to which Aldenrade belonged, was raised to an independent mayor's office in the Ruhrort district (from 1909 Dinslaken district ). Mining developed as an essential branch of the economy, particularly through the Walsum colliery, which was operated in Alt-Walsum from 1927 to 2008 .

The developments of the late 19th and early 20th centuries led to an expansion of the local infrastructure and were also responsible for the fact that a Catholic church building with St. Josef was built in Aldenrade between 1914 and 1915 . The existing Protestant counterpart was given the status of its own parish on April 1, 1914 due to the increased number of followers, after it had previously belonged to von Holten. In World War II, large parts of the buildings were destroyed, while the Catholic Church survived the war severely prejudice to. Because of this, a large part of the buildings that exist today was only built in the post-war period. In 1975 Aldenrade was incorporated into Duisburg with Walsum.

District image and infrastructure

Aldenrade is considered the center of the Walsum district, which is why there are a large number of different shops and banks, especially at Kometenplatz on the edge of Friedrich-Ebert-Straße. A market day is also held there twice a week. There are several schools and kindergartens in the district, and a number of green spaces have been set up in the very urban area. There are a number of sports clubs on site, including the RESG Walsum, the German record champion of the sport of roller hockey .

Landesstraße 1 runs through the district (Friedrich-Ebert-Straße, until 2006 Bundesstraße 8 ), which, as an important traffic axis, connects Wesel and Dinslaken in the north with Hamborn and Duisburg-Zentrum in the south. It is crossed by the state road 155 as a connection to Oberhausen-Holten in the east and the Rhine ferry Alt-Walsum - Orsoy in the west.

In the east, Aldenrade is separated from the neighboring Wehofen by the A 59 , which runs as a city motorway in north-south direction through Duisburg and further as the B8 to Düsseldorf-Golzheim .
