Duisburg wooden harbor
The Holzhafen in Duisburg is a ship turning point in the inner harbor between the marina and the Portsmouth dam . It was created from 1889 to 1893 through the expansion of the harbor basin and was originally used as a meeting point for the timber rafting industry.
Even before the upswing of the railways, the coal traders earned a little extra by transporting wood on the ships that returned empty. After the decline in coal transports, the port utilization was also lower, so that the "Rhein-RuhrCanal-Actien-Verein" looked around for other sources of income for the port from 1869. The sawmills of the three companies August Nieten, Matthias Rosendahl and HH Elshorst were located nearby. In 1870 two other large timber companies, Albert Maasen and Brügmann & Sohn, set up shop with modern steam sawmills. For this purpose, with the excavation from the harbor basin, a flood-proof area was created at the height of the spring wall.
In 1891 the entire wood store on it burned down and was rebuilt by 1893 with a modern log elevator, steam saw mill and planing mill. At the same time, the Floßbach & Co company commissioned its planing mill on the other side. Both plants were integrated into the extension of the inner harbor, the wooden harbor was founded.
The round wood processed there came mainly from the Spessart and the Black Forest on the Rhine to Duisburg in rafts that could be several hundred meters long. Duisburg thus became the hub of the timber trade.
Today the Holzhafen is only used as a ship turning area. A step promenade with a total area of 18,000 m² was built on its banks. According to Structurelab's plans , the Eurogate Duisburg office and service complex is to be built here .
Since the harbor basin is fed with recooled water, it is also a rich and well-known fishing spot, similar to the railway basin in Duisburg-Ruhrort .
