The Hansegracht day care center is part of the living concept at Duisburg Inner Harbor and is located in the historic buildings of Duisburg's first tobacco factory . It is part of the Route of Industrial Culture .

Facility

In the day-care center, children from three years of age are looked after until they start school. There are currently four groups with 25 children each; the facility is designed for a maximum of 120 children. The kindergarten works across groups, which means that the children can take part in general offers or in activities in other groups. An educational focus is - also due to the proximity to museums and art objects - working in art projects. The city of Duisburg is responsible for the institution.

building

The kindergarten is located in the former administration building next to and above the archway of the tobacco factory Arnold Böninger (brand name "AB") at the southern end of the Hansegracht .

In 1907 the factory had to move to the inner harbor after the original production building in Kuhstrasse was destroyed in a major fire. From 1912 to 1975, the factory produced chewing and smoking tobacco. Miners were the main buyers of the chewing tobacco, as it was not allowed to smoke underground.

The company went back to a grocery store owned by Peter Böninger in the first third of the 17th century, the company owners were connected to the history of the city of Duisburg in a variety of ways: Arnold Böninger became mayor in 1812, his son Carl Böninger was involved in founding Rhein-Canal-Aktienverein (financing of the canal connection to the Rhine) involved and chairman of the Chamber of Commerce. He also made sure that Duisburg got a connection to the Cologne-Minden Railway . The historical documents of the Arnold Böninger company (running from 1632 to 1992) have been processed by the Rheinisch-Westfälisches Wirtschaftsarchiv zu Köln since 1992.

In March 1989 the company headquarters were relocated from Duisburg to Bernau / Chiemsee, in 1994 the remaining buildings and the property were sold to the city of Duisburg, and in 1995 the factory was demolished. The alterations by the GEBAG for the day care center were completed in 1998, it was one of the first completed buildings in the redesigned inner harbor.
