Garden of Remembrance (Duisburg)
The Garden of Remembrance - also known as the Old Town Park - is a city park in the inner harbor of Duisburg, created in 1999 based on plans by Dani Karavan . It is the most extensive project by the Land Art artist in Germany to date .
In the immediate vicinity are the community center (with synagogue) of the Jewish community of Duisburg-Mülheim / Ruhr-Oberhausen , Yitzhak-Rabin-Platz, the city wall with the Koblenz tower, a senior citizen center and the Duisburg marina with the Buckel Bridge . The city of Duisburg can be reached on foot via the Kuhlenwall green area.
In the three-hectare park, deliberately carved out remains of the former buildings (including Spar-Zentrale , Allgemeine Land- und Seetransport AG, Hermann Ludwig) were left standing in order to use them as event locations or observation towers (see the staircase on the right in the picture). The ground plan of the demolished buildings was stylized by the white concrete strips typical of the artist Karavan, the central path was composed of the rubble like a mosaic, a triangular hill and a chaotic rock garden were modulated from the remains of the demolition, and various bodies of water were carved out. The planting includes the remains of the building, mountain pines were planted on the observation tower and Gleditschien in the Ludwigforum, the former hall floor. The former use of the area as a grain transhipment ("bread basket of the Ruhr area") is taken up by grain and sunflower fields and the scales in the middle of the park (see picture on the left). The park thus creates a connection between the industrial past and the future, which is oriented towards culture and leisure.
At night the park is illuminated by the installation by lighting designers Belzner and Hofmann.
