Railway stations in North Rhine-Westphalia |
The Duisburg-Wedau train station is a regional train station in the Wedau district of Duisburg in the western Ruhr area in North Rhine-Westphalia . In addition to the passenger station , the Wedau marshalling yard , the Wedau depot and the Wedau repair shop belonged to the Duisburg-Wedau station.
It is located on the Troisdorf – Mülheim-Speldorf railway line , which today is only served by freight traffic to the south and has been completely closed to the north. The Duisburg-Wedau-Bottrop Süd railway line , which was specially built for freight traffic, and the connecting line to Duisburg Central Station begin at the station .
history
The Rheinische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft (RhE) built the Troisdorf – Mülheim-Speldorf line and inaugurated it on November 19, 1874.
From Wedau station, the RhE built a connection to the Duisburg RhE station (now part of the Duisburg main station ) and its line to the North Sea . This route was opened on October 15, 1880 and originally ran along today's Bertaallee between the Bertasee and the Schauinsland-Reisen-Arena .
The original station building from 1914 was demolished in 1938 in favor of a new building.
Operations in the marshalling yard ended on May 27, 2000. The marshalling yard was shut down on December 17, 2006, and the Wedau ESTW was put into operation at the same time .
Todays situation
The former station building in the shape of a horse is badly run down, destroyed by vandalism and smeared with graffiti . Until the building was closed, both island platforms could be reached via the integrated passenger bridge.
Of the former four platform tracks, only one is still in operation. The easternmost track has been dismantled, the western platform has not been accessible since the reception building was closed. The two western tracks are now only used by freight traffic or (without stopping) by diverted passenger trains on the main Düsseldorf – Duisburg line.
The Wedau repair shop is closed, as is the Wedau depot with its two turntables and the marshalling yard with its two parallel shunting systems with 28 tracks (north system, eastern part) and 32 tracks (south system, western part).
The demolition of the integrated passenger bridge began on December 12, 2015. For this, the freight train traffic on the route had to be stopped for about ten days. For local passenger transport, buses to Duisburg main station were used as an alternative.
After the station building had been de-designed and acquired by a private company, it was to be renovated from mid-2015 (the building was also given a glass roof) and converted into offices. The renovation work in the station building had not started by the end of 2015.
Only the station clock was secured and is to be reactivated later inside the building.
location
The station facilities extend over a length of more than four kilometers and a width of up to 400 meters. In the west they are bounded (from north to south) by the Duisburg Sports Park ( Wedau Sports Park until 2008 ), the Wedau railway workers' settlement and the Sechs-Seen-Platte . To the east of the railway facilities are the Duisburg city forest , the Bissingheim district and the duck catching area .
The former station building is located directly on the Wedau Bridge , which crosses the railway systems in a west-east direction and connects the two districts of Wedau and Bissingheim.
Contrary to what the name suggests, the passenger station is much closer to the Bissingheim district. Since the reception building was closed, the only remaining platform can now only be accessed at ground level from Bissingheimer Strasse at Worringer Weg in Bissingheim.
service
For local rail passenger transport , the station was served hourly by the regional train RB 37 , known as "Der Wedauer", until December 2019 . The Wedau was operated by DB Regio , which used class 628 diesel multiple units and class 426 electric multiple units . The line was discontinued without replacement for the timetable change in December 2019 and the stop was closed permanently for the time being.
