The Düsseldorf Hauptbahnhof underground station is an underground station of the Düsseldorf Stadtbahn , located under the Düsseldorf Hauptbahnhof , which was opened to traffic on May 7, 1988.
The tunnel station is an essential part of the most important junction between the Stadtbahn and the long-distance , regional and S-Bahn traffic of the railway , four tram lines and numerous bus lines in the Düsseldorf city area. In 2002, around 170,000 people entering, leaving and changing trains used the underground station every working day.
location
The underground station is at the southeast end of the inner city tunnel of the Düsseldorf Stadtbahn , through which the first and second trunk lines run. The four tracks (two on each floor) in the Oststraße subway station under Friedrich-Ebert-Straße are led to one level in the direction of the main train station, so that the one-storey facility below the main train station has four tracks with two medium -sized platforms . In the further course the two main lines separate and lead on the one hand to the underground station Handelszentrum / Moskauer Straße and on to Eller and on the other hand to the underground station Oberbilker Markt / Warschauer Straße and on to Holthausen .
history
Construction of the inner city tunnel began while construction was still being carried out on the northern line. The schedule for the construction of the Düsseldorf Hbf underground station was closely related to the schedule for the renovation of the entire main station. When it was completed in 1985, the subway station had also been completed. Three years later, on May 7, 1988, this was put into operation together with the entire light rail system.
Station complex
The tracks of the underground station run at right angles to the railway tracks above . A mezzanine floor makes the individual tracks of long-distance and regional traffic accessible and houses numerous shops. From here escalators and fixed staircases lead in four places to the two high-floor middle platforms of the light rail.
To the east there is a four-track parking facility just behind the platforms.
traffic
The Düsseldorf Hauptbahnhof underground station is on the first and second trunk line of the Düsseldorf light rail network. All seven lines operating on these routes serve the station. The lines U 70 and U 78 end at this station. In addition to the transfer options between the individual tram lines, there are numerous other transfer connections in the Düsseldorf local transport network and beyond. A total of five trams and a further 16 bus routes serve the above-ground stops on Konrad-Adenauer-Platz. There are also six lines of the S-Bahn Rhein-Ruhr and other connections in regional and long-distance traffic.
The neighboring cities on the left bank of the Rhine and the districts of Lörick , Heerdt and Oberkassel can be reached via the express line from Krefeld and the other additional lines from Meerbusch and Neuss . The neighboring city and the northern districts of Wittlaer , Kaiserswerth and Lohausen can be reached via the line from Duisburg . The line branching off in Stockum to the ESPRIT arena connects this as well as the Düsseldorf exhibition center . In the direction of the old town there is a connection to the central transfer point Heinrich-Heine-Allee. There you can change to the third main route, the so-called Wehrhahn Line . In the further course of the first and second trunk line, the southeastern districts of Lierenfeld , Eller , Oberbilk , Wersten , Holthausen and Benrath , as well as the Heinrich Heine University and the Botanical Garden are connected.
With one exception, all light rail lines are served by the Düsseldorf Rheinbahn alone. The exception is the U 79 line, which is operated jointly with the Duisburger Verkehrsgesellschaft . The Duisburger Verkehrsgesellschaft operates high-floor B80C light rail vehicles on the U 79 line . In addition, as on all other lines, type B80D wagons, also high-floor, are used. GT8SU vehicles converted from GT8S trams also run on the U 75 and U 77 lines.
In the local transport plan 2002-2007 of the city of Düsseldorf the introduction of a new light rail line U 80 is planned. For this, the construction of a bypass of the Düsseldorf exhibition center with a new underground station Messe-Süd is necessary. If this measure should be implemented, the subway station Düsseldorf Hauptbahnhof is intended as the end point of this line.
The planning approval procedure for trunk line 5 , on which the U81 is to travel from Düsseldorf Hbf via Heinrich-Heine-Allee and Freiligrathplatz to Düsseldorf Airport , has been running since September 2015 . A new bridge is to be built from Freiligrathplatz over the Nordstern and then a tunnel to the airport terminal with an underground station there. The city plans to start construction in late 2019 [obsolete] and commissioning in 2023 . The Hauptbahnhof underground station is to be the end of the line.
The following light rail lines serve the underground station:
