The trunk line 5 is a long-term planned urban railway line of the Stadtbahn Düsseldorf for Neuss , Meerbusch , Düsseldorf and Ratingen . It is to connect the Neuss- Rheinparkcenter S-Bahn station with Ratingen. The new U81 tram will run on it.
Course and route
The planning provides that the first part of the trunk line 5 between Freiligrathplatz and Lohausen branches off from the existing line to Duisburg and turns to a crossing of the federal highway 44 . Then it will be taken in an elevated position onto the straightened and widened airport road. Via a new ramp in the course of the street, the route reaches the new Flughafen Terminal / Maritimplatz underground station underground . An extension to the Düsseldorf Airport train station is part of the third construction phase.
The route was still open for a long time. In addition to the tunnel solution at the airport, consideration was also given to running the route above ground and thus making another stop possible. 400 meters in front of the new Flughafen Terminal underground station , a branch was to be built into a ramp, which was to lead into a tunnel section as an advance payment for further construction to Düsseldorf Airport train station.
At the end of October 2014, the “traffic light alliance” made up of the SPD, the Greens and the FDP agreed to build a bridge for the intersection with the Düsseldorf-Stockum junction .
planning
The original planning of the route goes back to a failed Olympic application by the city of Düsseldorf. The route is planned so that it can be implemented in several stages. ( Sections in bold indicate areas that are newly connected to the light rail network.)
Operating stage | Route | opening | Stops (subway stations) |
---|---|---|---|
1 | Freiligrathplatz - Düsseldorf Airport Terminal | 2024 | 2 (1) |
2 | Handweiser - Freiligrathplatz - Düsseldorf Airport Terminal | open | 12 (1) |
3 | Handweiser - Freiligrathplatz - Düsseldorf Airport Terminal - Düsseldorf Airport long-distance train station | open | 14 (1) |
4th | Handweiser - Freiligrathplatz - Düsseldorf Airport Terminal - Düsseldorf Airport long-distance train station - Ratingen | open | 17 (1) |
5 | Neuss Rheinparkcenter - Handweiser - Freiligrathplatz - Düsseldorf Airport Terminal - Düsseldorf Airport long-distance train station - Ratingen | open | 25 (1) |
In March 2013, the city of Düsseldorf's traffic department presented a plan for the first section of the route. The project is to be implemented before 2019 in order to receive funding from the federal government. The costs (as of 2013) amount to around 110 million euros. At the same time, the planning of the third construction phase Düsseldorf Airport Terminal – Düsseldorf Airport train station was discontinued for economic reasons. According to the city of Düsseldorf, parallel operation with the SkyTrain, which also serves this section, does not make sense. The 2017 local transport plan, however, provides for the third construction phase to the airport train station to be implemented again. The planning of the second construction phase Messe-Handweiser including the required Rhine crossing will also be continued.
In the meantime, the planning for the main route 5 is getting more and more precise. According to the current status (08/2019), the first construction phase from Freiligrathplatz to the new Flughafen Terminal underground station is due to go into operation in 2024.
business
The route to the 20-minute cycle to operate. At major events and trade fairs, special trains should go to the trade fair and the airport. If the planned operating stage 2 is realized, the S 11 line of the Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn and possibly also the SkyTrain could be discontinued. The prospect of further optimization is the introduction of a 10-minute cycle and the implementation of operating levels three and four. According to calculations by the city of Düsseldorf , 18,700 passengers per day are expected.
Since no sufficient passenger volume has yet been forecast for the entire route, the overall project is only a concept for the time being. However, the implementation of the ESPRIT arena / Messe Nord - Düsseldorf Airport Terminal section currently seems possible in principle, because the forecast revenues from passenger traffic between the exhibition center and Düsseldorf Airport make the project costs estimated for the section economically viable.
Lines and timetable
With the full commissioning of main line 5, a total of three lines will be used on the line. While the U81 line travels the entire route, the U78 and U82 lines are only used in sections. The respective sections of the trunk line 5 are shown in bold.
