The Freiligrathplatz (formerly Richthofen Place ) is a roundabout in Düsseldorf district Stockum and important transport hub. It is particularly important due to its location and short distance to the ESPRIT arena (formerly Rheinstadion), the Düsseldorf trade fair and the Aquazoo with the flower landscape of the Nordpark , which is known far beyond the city limits . In addition, the square is a popular meeting point before major events in the nearby Merkur Spiel Arena, especially before Fortuna Düsseldorf football matches .

designation

Freiligrathplatz was named on November 12, 1948 after the German lyric poet Ferdinand Freiligrath . Previously it was called Richthofenplatz - in memory of the German fighter pilot Manfred von Richthofen.

Description of the place and traffic situation

Four large roads lead into Freiligrathplatz, which has an approximate area of 7850 m². To the south runs the Kaiserswerther Straße , which leads to the city center of Düsseldorf ( Pempelfort district ), in the west the Merkur Spiel-Arena and the exhibition grounds can be reached via Beckbuschstraße , which leads to the Niederrheinstraße in the northwest of the square. a. to the A 44 motorway and to Düsseldorf Airport , the Sandweg in the northeast to the neighboring Unterrath district .

In addition, the square has two tram stops along the trunk line 1 of the Düsseldorf Stadtbahn and is a junction of the Düsseldorf bus routes. A modern elevated platform was built in the west in 1999 for the U78 line, which reaches the final stop Merkur Spiel-Arena / Messe Nord in just two minutes and starts at Düsseldorf Central Station . To the north of the roundabout is the tram stop via which the U79 line runs in the direction of Duisburg- Duissern / Meiderich or Düsseldorf Hbf, Düsseldorf-Oberbilk and Düsseldorf University East during rush hour . On September 14, 2009, after months of construction, a high-floor side platform was opened, which is directly connected to the bus stop. The space for urban bus services is also important. The (final) stop of lines 730, 760 and 809 is on Sandweg. There are connections to the airport and the northeastern districts of Düsseldorf and the neighboring city of Ratingen.

Special

Not far from the underground station is a former tram stop that was abandoned in 1990. The “Zu den Eichen” stop was just 300 meters away.
