Main route 1 (Düsseldorf tram)

The trunk line 1 in Düsseldorf is one of the first two main lines of the Düsseldorf Stadtbahn . In the inner city tunnel , route 1 will be merged with route 2 for 4 underground stations. There are a total of 9 underground stations along the route, which is served by four lines of the light rail. Three access routes lead into the greater Düsseldorf area .

history

After a council decision by the city of Düsseldorf in 1969 to build a light rail system in Düsseldorf, construction work on the first line began on March 24, 1973. Up until 1981, a tunnel was built between Heinrich-Heine-Allee (Rampe Opernhaus ), under the Hofgarten and through to Kaiserswerther Strasse , where the tunnel ends at the Kennedydamm ramp . This line was opened on October 3, 1981. From then on, the first two underground stations, Nordstrasse and Klever Strasse (renamed Victoriaplatz / Klever Strasse in the 2000s ). As work was being done in the 1980s to build an inner-city tunnel, construction work continued after the opening. Shortly before completion, the connection between main line 1 and the completed main line 2 was made between March 22nd and May 6th, 1988 . At that time, line 718 had to be taken over the old tram route via Kaiserswerther Strasse and Fischerstrasse to the Jan-Wellem-Platz terminus, while lines 79 and 711 turned at Nordstrasse underground station. After trunk line 2 was opened on May 7, 1988, these three lines could run to the new terminus at Düsseldorf Hbf. In the course of this connection, the opera house ramp was demolished. In the late 1990s, the former four-track line between Theodor-Heuss-Brücke and Freiligrathplatz was rebuilt. Low-floor stops became high-floor platforms and the line was now double-tracked. The Freiligrathplatz stop had previously only had a high-floor platform for the U78 line, while the U79 line still served the low-floor tram stops. After months of construction, two high-floor side platforms were also opened for the U79 on September 14, 2009.

The D-Bahn is the most important feeder line and the north branch of the main line 1. It begins in the inner city tunnel and runs through the districts of Düsseldorf-Stockum , Düsseldorf-Lohausen , Düsseldorf-Kaiserswerth and Düsseldorf-Wittlaer to Duisburg . From here the U78 goes towards Messe Düsseldorf .

The connection of the south entrance of the Düsseldorf exhibition center to the light rail network has been promoted since the 1990s. Both a route on the surface and one in the tunnel were examined and discussed in order to take account of the trade fair company's wish for better transport connections. The planning, supported by a Red-Green Council majority, provided for a continuous above-ground route. In the 1999 local election campaign, the discussion between an above-ground and a tunnel solution was thematized by a citizens' initiative and became a city-wide topic. As a result of the election and the change to a black and yellow council majority, the concept for an above-ground solution was discarded and the administration commissioned with the investigation of a route in the tunnel

This is the second branch of the 1st trunk line in Düsseldorf. This branch was built in the 1920s to develop the Rheinstadion, which was demolished in 2002 . In connection with the Reichsausstellung Schaffendes Volk on the grounds of the Nordpark in the 1930s, the access route on Kaiserswerther Strasse was expanded to four tracks from Reeser Platz in order to cope with the expected number of passengers. This meant that the tram to the stadium could be served with a much more frequent cycle, as the rapid transit railway to Duisburg , which also ran there, received its own pair of tracks as a result of the renovation.

With the opening of the inner city tunnel in 1988, this section became part of the Düsseldorf Stadtbahn. In the 1990s, the four-track expansion was reduced to two tracks. All stations along this route were given generously developed and barrier-free elevated platforms in the central position. In 2004, the branch to the then newly opened LTU arena received the new Arena / Messe Nord underground station and thus a new terminal. When there are no events, the U78 trains run every 30 minutes via the Sportpark Nord / Europaplatz stop, the other trains go directly to the arena. The Sportpark Nord / Europaplatz stop is not served during events.

The southern access route begins east of the main station and leads via the districts of Oberbilk and Wersten to Holthausen . This section was part of one of the older tram routes which was initially used by line 18. Even before the gap between Uni-Wersten and the associated extension of line 1 (now 701), this line connected Düsseldorf city center with today's Benrath district.

The formerly above-ground tram route ran from today's Mitsubishi Electric Halle into the city via Kölner Strasse and merged with the rest of the tram network at the Worringer Platz junction . When the inner city tunnel was opened in 1988, a provisional ramp was built south of Worringer Platz at Stahlwerkstrasse, which was connected to the tram route on Kölner Strasse. Because of this, the section between Worringer Platz and the new ramp was converted into a purely operational route . The tram route on Kölner and Siegburger Strasse thus became part of the Düsseldorf light rail network. In 1994, the construction of a tunnel extension began from the ramp at Stahlwerkstrasse below Kölner Strasse to today's ramp at PhilipsHalle on Siegburger Strasse. This should also bypass the bottleneck in Oberbilk / Kölner Strasse and relieve the road itself. According to the timetable, the travel time of the trains between Stahlwerkstraße and Oberbilker S-Bahn station should be 5 to 6 minutes during rush hour. However, due to the frequent backlogs, there were regular delays.

In order to be able to connect the inner city tunnel to the new tunnel in 2001, the operating section between the ramp at Stahlwerkstraße and Worringer Platz was opened again for regular service and the ramp was dismantled accordingly. The trains coming from Holthausen ended and started for the last time on Konrad-Adenauer-Platz at the main station. There you could change to the same or one of the other lines in the underground station to continue your journey. After the tunnel opened on June 15, 2002, the above-ground route between PhilipsHalle and Worringer Platz was finally shut down. Kölner Straße was rebuilt accordingly in the following years between Oberbilker Markt and the Oberbilk S-Bahn station. The Siegburger Strasse was also given a completely new look up to the Düsseldorf Wersten junction of the A 46 . Where the tram and private transport had to share a total of 4 lanes, the light rail now has its own track structure. For this purpose, the road outside the city was shifted to the west and the entire cross-section was widened accordingly. The preliminary work for this expansion was already recognizable years earlier, so the buildings on the western side were built in advance, shifted to the rear - similar to what can currently be seen on Grafenberger Allee between Lichtstrasse and Schlüterstrasse. The ramp for the longer version of the Wehrhahn line was planned there .

The current travel time of the light rail vehicles between Düsseldorf Hbf and Oberbilk S-Bahn station is just 5 minutes through the tunnel, without any notable delays.

In the course of the construction of the Wehrhahn Line, there will be no direct connection from the main train station to the university. For this reason, the U79 was extended to university in 2009/2010 . The route was completely in place, but points were missing from the direction of Kölner Landstrasse in the direction of Werstener Strasse, and from Werstener Strasse in the direction of Universitätsstrasse and vice versa. In the course of the renovation, an elevated platform was added at the Südpark stop. Construction work began in June 2009, and since August 30, 2010 the U79 line has been running to the University of East / Botanical Garden.
