Local transport in Düsseldorf
Local public transport in the North Rhine-Westphalian state capital Düsseldorf consists of
- Bus, city and tram lines , almost all of which are operated by Rheinbahn , and
- Regional Express , Regionalbahn and S-Bahn lines , which are operated by Deutsche Bahn and other railway companies.
There are several large transfer hubs in Düsseldorf, the largest being the main train station and the Heinrich-Heine-Allee subway station in the old town, the Südpark and Benrath train station in the south, Vennhauser Allee in the Eller district in the east or Heinrichstrasse on the Count Mörsenbroicher egg in the north.
background
history
The history of Düsseldorf's local public transport goes back to 1876. Since then, has rail-based mass transit in the city of an initial Pferdebahn to today's road and rail development. As early as 1838, when the first section of today's Düsseldorf – Wuppertal railway between Düsseldorf and Erkrath and thus the first steam-powered railway line in western Germany was put into operation, railway connections to the region and neighboring cities were established. As a means of transport in Düsseldorf's express traffic, the S-Bahn today uses this established infrastructure. Today's main train station has been the most important railway station since 1891 . The railway network has been supplemented by two as a light railway operated Regional tramway -Strecken to Krefeld (since 1898) and to Duisburg (since 1900), which is also the basic unit of today rail network formed, the second leg of the urban rapid transit. Since 1924 also operate buses in Dusseldorf and the surrounding area. In addition to supplying areas that could not be reached by tram with city buses , long-distance lines later also took over the disused tram routes to Moers , Vohwinkel and Ohligs .
technical infrastructure
Except for the SkyTrain - a suspension railway between the long-distance train station and the airport terminals - all trains run on rails with a gauge of 1435 millimeters ( standard gauge ). Regional express trains, regional and suburban railways on the one hand, and city and trams on the other, use independent route networks. Lines on which light rail trains such as the Karlsruhe and RegioTram Kassel light rail travel on both tram and railroad tracks were discussed but not implemented. While the RegionalExpress trains and regional trains sometimes have to use the tracks for long-distance passenger transport , the S-Bahn trains run on separate tracks and stop at their own platforms at the 25 stops in the city .
Light rail and trams share a network with a uniform gauge and electrical supply (720 volts direct current , provided by 57 substations ).

The main mode of transport in the city center is the standard-gauge light rail network, which has existed since 1978. It operated in the city center three underground trunk routes, of which the first two opened in 1978 Downtown Tunnel run and the third by the 2016 opened Wehrhahn tunnel from the S-Bahn Wehrhahn to S-Bahnhof Bilk . The main hub of the light rail network is the Heinrich-Heine-Allee underground station, which is the only underground station of the Düsseldorf light rail network to be served by all light rail lines. The main lines 1 and 2 with the lines U70 and U74 to U79 are served with high-floor lines and the third main line with the lines U71 to U73 and U83 is served with low-floor lines.

tram
The Düsseldorf tram is the city's second local rail-bound public transport system. Like the Düsseldorf tram, the network has standard gauge and is also compatible with the tram network in terms of profile. The Stadtbahn network also emerged from the Düsseldorf tram network and the only difference between the two networks is that the Stadtbahn serves tunnels with bidirectional vehicles and is high-floor with the exception of lines U71 to U73 and U83. Until 2016, there were more tram lines in Düsseldorf than light rail lines. Since 2016, however, more light rail lines have been running in Düsseldorf than tram lines, as part of the tram network was transferred to the light rail network through the opening of a new underground tunnel . The tram runs with one-way vehicles.
A total of seven tram lines operate in Düsseldorf:

Bus transport
Daytime traffic
The bus network in Düsseldorf is the third mode of transport. It consists of long-distance city bus routes, various express and metro bus routes. The city bus lines that run during the day have three-digit line numbers, of which the first digit VRR is a 7 or 8. All bus routes that begin with a 7 operate exclusively on the right bank of the Rhine, while all bus routes with the 800 numbers (also) serve the Düsseldorf districts on the left bank of the Rhine or make connections to Neuss. Exceptions are the weekday night traffic lines 807-817 and the special lines 891 (to Unterbacher See), 894 (to Grafenberger Sportrennbahn ) and the trade fair line 896.
The Metrobus lines have been running since August 29, 2018 and provide fast cross-connections tangential to the predominantly radial tram and light rail network on the axes with the highest demand. Compared to the parallel city bus routes, the Metrobus routes only stop at selected stops.
Here is an overview of all lines:

Night traffic
During the nights on weekdays (i.e. Monday to Friday), there are occasional night express lines that are identified by low numbers in the 800 range. The routes and stops used are based on the routes of the light rail lines in the first and second trunk route. Trips on these lines usually run between 1 a.m. and 4 a.m. at irregular intervals, usually three trips per night and direction.

Rail transport
The most important railway junction is the main train station , where many railway lines cross: Cologne – Duisburg , Mönchengladbach – Düsseldorf and Düsseldorf – Wuppertal . It is not only a major railway junction in Düsseldorf, but also throughout North Rhine-Westphalia.
This results in a dense network of regional trains and S-Bahn trains in Düsseldorf .
Long-distance transport
Düsseldorf has two long-distance train stations: Düsseldorf main station and Düsseldorf airport
The main train station is currently served by six ICE lines and four IC lines. In addition, the Hamburg-Cologne-Express and two lines of the ÖBB Nightjet called EuroNight - night trains of the ÖBB stop .

With 328 long-distance trains running regularly via the main station per day, the main station was the third most important node in the network of the Deutsche Bundesbahn in the 1989 summer timetable.
Regional traffic
Düsseldorf Central Station is the junction of ten regional express lines that run every hour . These form the backbone of NRW regional traffic, especially on the main route from Cologne to Duisburg.
Besides the main train station, the airport long-distance train station and the Düsseldorf-Benrath stop are the only regional transport stops in the city. All other 25 train stations are purely S-Bahn stops. The extremely busy Düsseldorf-Bilk S-Bahn station , which is a large transfer hub from the west to Düsseldorf's old town and Heinrich Heine University , will also be served by regional train lines in the future. In the original RRX concept, the Düsseldorf-Benrath stop was supposed to be a pure S-Bahn stop. In the meantime, however, it has been decided that Düsseldorf-Benrath will become RRX stop after all.
Mainly regional express lines operate in Düsseldorf. A regional train line runs every half hour to Grevenbroich and every hour to Bedburg.
Train
The following S-Bahn lines serve Düsseldorf. They all cross in the main train station.
Line S 7 only serves Düsseldorf main station Monday to Friday with two trips to Düsseldorf in the morning and two trips to Remscheid-Lennep in the afternoon.
Future of local transport
A wide variety of suggested measures were collected for the current local transport plan. A first draft is available.
In addition, the city of Düsseldorf wants to expand its bus network with a metro bus system.
