Local traffic in Wiesbaden

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The landmark of Wiesbaden's local traffic: the Nerobergbahn

Local public transport in Wiesbaden , the capital of Hesse, consists of bus lines , S-Bahn and regional trains . Wiesbaden belongs primarily to the Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund (RMV) in terms of tariffs , but has a special feature that tickets for the Rhein-Nahe-Nahverkehrsverbund (RNN) are also recognized and sold (see tariffs ). The Nerobergbahn is also part of local public transport , although it is not included in the tariff.

History and future

Tram and trolleybuses

Public utility ticket with a route network map from the 1960s

In 1875 a horse-drawn tram line was put into operation between Rheinstrasse and Nerotal . 13 years later it was replaced by a meter-gauge steam train . From 1896 the first trams in Wiesbaden were operated electrically, and the offer was expanded to a network with nine lines by 1914. Because of discrepancies and problems caused by the war, tram operations were gradually reduced from 1929 and stopped in 1955, while the districts of Kastel and Kostheim were still connected to the Mainz tram network, which still exists today, until 1958 . From 1948 to 1961 trolleybuses (2 lines) also operated in Wiesbaden.

railroad

In 1840 the city of Wiesbaden was connected to Frankfurt by the Taunus Railway . With the construction of the Nassau Rheinbahn in 1856, Biebrich and a year later also the central Rhine station on the right bank of the Rhine were connected to Rüdesheim am Rhein and Niederlahnstein , and later also to Koblenz . In 1879, the Ludwigsbahnhof and the connected Ländchesbahn to Niedernhausen were built . From 1889 to 1983 Wiesbaden was connected to Diez and Limburg by the Aartalbahn for passenger traffic . Part of this route is still used today by the Nassau Tourist Railway (NTB). In 1906 the three train stations in the city center were replaced by Wiesbaden Central Station .

Planning for the Wiesbaden tram

From 1998 there were considerations to build a city railway through the city center, which should be linked with the Aartalbahn to Bad Schwalbach . The plans for later network expansion were discontinued in 2001. In June 2011 the discussion about a rail connection between the city center and the main train station under the name WIBahn was resumed; this project was also discontinued in 2013.

In autumn 2016 it became known that another attempt had been made to supplement the inner-city public transport by rail, as the capacity limit had been reached on some bus routes. The new project under the name CityBahn is now trying a different approach and is to grow from Mainz towards Wiesbaden. This means that the infrastructure of the Mainz tram can also be used and financial resources can be saved. It is planned to use the meter gauge on the other side of the Rhine. A cost-benefit study on December 12, 2017 will show whether and how the construction of a rail-based public transport system in Wiesbaden is possible and useful. A line is planned from the Mainz University of Applied Sciences via the University, past the main train station, over the Theodor-Heuss-Brück, via Wiesbaden-Biebrich, Wiesbaden Central Station, Bahnhofstrasse, Rheinstrasse, Ringkirche to the Rhein-Main University of Applied Sciences. It is to be extended to Kohlheck and then via the disused Aartalbahn via Taunusstein to Bad Schwalbach. Since the CityBahn is to be built as a meter gauge, the section of the Aartalbahn Kohlheck - Bad Schwalbach would have to get a third rail or be rerouted.

Rail transport

S-Bahn in Mainz-Kastel
Wiesbaden Central Station

The following Wiesbaden train stations are served by the regional trains of the Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund (RMV) and / or the S-Bahns of the S-Bahn Rhein-Main :

The S1 (via Frankfurt-Höchst and the Frankfurt City Tunnel to Rödermark-Ober-Roden ) and the S8 (via Mainz Hauptbahnhof , Frankfurt Airport and the City Tunnel to Offenbach Ost , sometimes also to Hanau Hbf ) depart every 30 minutes Wiesbaden, every 60 minutes during off-peak hours (Sunday morning and late evening). The S9 (via Frankfurt Airport and the City-Tunnel to Hanau Hbf) runs every 30 minutes, from around 8 p.m. and every 60 minutes on Sundays (then regularly only to Frankfurt Hbf ).

Line 10 runs from Neuwied via Koblenz ( right-hand Rhine route ) and Lorchhausen (first stop on the RMV ) to Wiesbaden Hbf and then via Mainz-Kastel and Frankfurt-Höchst to Frankfurt Hbf ( Taunus railway ). With the change of operator in December 2010, line 10 received a uniform stopping concept. While most intermediate stations are passed through on the Frankfurt - Wiesbaden section, the trains to Koblenz stop everywhere. Previously, both RE and RB trains were on the entire route from Frankfurt to Koblenz, although the regional trains from Frankfurt to Wiesbaden only stopped at the RE stations in Mainz-Kastel and Frankfurt-Höchst. Since the 2018/2019 timetable change on December 9, 2018, line 10 has been supplemented by the newly introduced RE9 line with 3 journeys during rush hour on working days on the Eltville - Frankfurt Hbf section, which leaves Wiesbaden central station, which shortens the journey time by ten minutes . These trains have been running every morning and afternoon since December 2019. The RB 10 runs every hour and every half hour during rush hour. In 2019 it was supposed to run every half hour on weekends to Assmannshausen in the summer months , but the operator VIAS lacked the train drivers. In recent years it has been so overcrowded when the weather is nice that passengers have not been taken. From May 2020, the half-hourly service is to be introduced.

Line 21 ( Ländchesbahn ) ends in Niedernhausen and is partly continued as line 20 to Limburg .

Line 33 has been running since December 10, 2018 with a direct pair of trains between Wiesbaden and Budenheim and on to Bad Kreuznach / Idar-Oberstein .

Line 75 ( Rhein-Main-Bahn ) runs via Mainz , Groß-Gerau , Darmstadt , Dieburg and Babenhausen to Aschaffenburg . It has been running every half hour to Darmstadt since the end of 2018.

Until 1983, the Aartalbahn operated from the main train station via Bad Schwalbach to Limburg an der Lahn . The Landesdenkmal , Waldstrasse , Dotzheim and Chausseehaus train stations were located in Wiesbaden's urban area .

Bus transport

In Wiesbaden, 41 bus lines of ESWE-Verkehr ensure local traffic during the day, a ring line at night and 9 bus lines on weekends at night over a length of approx. 612 kilometers, in addition there are six sections served by collective call taxis , which, however partially operate outside the city area. In addition, 5 lines of the Mainzer Verkehrsgesellschaft mbH (MVG) run in or through the Mainz-Kastel and Mainz-Kostheim districts, which are part of Wiesbaden , plus 2 other night-time lines. Some of the bus routes (6, 9, 28 and 33) are based on a cooperation with MVG, the MVG route 68 is a cooperation between MVG and Omnibusverkehr Rhein-Nahe GmbH (ORN) and runs through the suburbs of Kastel and Kostheim. In addition, various lines of the Rheingau-Taunus-Verkehrsgesellschaft (RTV), the DB Regio Bus Mitte GmbH and the Nassauische Verkehrs-Gesellschaft mbH (NVG) operate in Wiesbaden, which serve destinations in the Hintertaunus and Rheingau and also serve individual stops in Wiesbaden . There is also line 262 going east, which runs from Platz der Deutschen Einheit in Wiesbaden city center via the suburb of Nordenstadt to Hofheim . Also since the end of 2016, line X26 has been running as part of the new RMV express bus network via the shortened route of the 262 (Hofheim) via Königstein and Oberursel to Bad Homburg .

The bus lines of ESWE Verkehrsgesellschaft mbH not only serve all Wiesbaden districts and parts of the city of Mainz , but also Niedernhausen and its districts of Königshofen and Oberjosbach , the Eppstein districts of Niederjosbach and Bremthal , Hochheim and its district of Massenheim and the Hofheim districts of Wallau and Wildsachsen .

There are four central bus hubs in the city center. These are:

  • Hauptbahnhof , opposite the main entrance. Regional lines ending at the main train station stop at the east exit
  • Dernsches site (Friedrichstrasse), heading west
  • Luisenplatz or Wilhelmstrasse (Luisenstrasse), heading east
  • Platz der Deutschen Einheit (towards West) and Schwalbacher Straße / LuisenForum (towards East), each with the stops for north-south traffic

With the exception of lines 9, 20, 26, AST35 / 36 and 39, all lines go to at least one of these junctions, but most lines serve several. This creates a close cycle between these stops and the most important lines are linked.

Extensive construction work has been taking place there since March 1, 2010 as part of the redesign of the Platz der Deutschen Einheit . They currently end at a provisional terminus in Schwalbacher Strasse near the confluence with Dotzheimer Strasse . All lines that are scheduled to have their terminus there should be given a new terminus at the next change in the timetable, as the construction plans do not provide for the possibility of turning and parking buses. It is currently not foreseeable whether and, if so, when this plan will be implemented.

Tact

As a rule, the city buses run every 10, 15 or 20 minutes, in the off-peak period (Mon - Fri until 6:30 a.m. and from 8 p.m., Sat until about 8 a.m. and from 8 p.m., Sun until about 12 p.m. and from 8 p.m. Most lines run every 30 or 60 minutes. Before the start of school and after the end of school, emergency vehicles are used for reinforcement, some of which also serve connections off the other regular routes. Lines 4 and 14 are an exception, and they run every 8 minutes during the day, which leads to a 4-minute cycle between the "Bismarckring" and "Biebrich-Rheinufer" stops.

The regional buses usually run every 30 or 60 minutes, and often only every 2 hours during off-peak periods. In addition, there are some trips outside of the existing cycles.

In the off-peak period, the ESWE Verkehrsgesellschaft guarantees connection to all city bus lines that are running there at the same time at the central transfer points, but some lines are excluded from this because they only run promptly. The night lines run once a day at 12:30 a.m., on weekends and before public holidays they run continuously every 90 minutes at 12:30 a.m., 2:00 a.m. and 3:30 a.m.

Infrastructure

Bus lanes

In Wiesbaden there are currently around 12 km of bus lanes which, apart from buses, can only be used by taxis and emergency vehicles by the police, fire brigade and rescue services and, since 2008, also by bicycles. After Hamburg (1962), Aachen, Bremen and other cities within Germany, Wiesbaden set up these special lanes on September 1, 1968 in order to better adhere to the timetables and to make bus traffic more independent of individual traffic. In addition, the "Wiesbaden bus lock" was "invented" in Wiesbaden. This is a signal system approx. 30 meters before the actual intersection, which enables the buses with a special signal to thread out of the bus lane into the lanes of individual traffic and ensures that the buses are usually the first vehicles to enter the intersection.

Driving on individual sections of the road is entirely restricted to buses, taxis and cyclists. For example, two sections of Friedrichstrasse on the Dernschen site and at the level of Kirchgasse , at the level of which Luisenstrasse is also closed to private traffic. Another similar street section exists in the Europaviertel on Willy-Brandt-Allee . The Europaviertel stop is on this section . Car traffic has to take the Konrad-Adenauer-Ring (2nd ring) and Charles-de-Gaulle-Straße .

Control technology

To control the operational process, tests of a computer-aided operations control system began in the early 1980s , and in 1985 a system from MBB was installed. It was hoped that this would optimize the offer and improve the attractiveness and working conditions. The vehicles were equipped with an on-board computer , a radio and an infrared transmitter and receiver, and later with a GPS receiver . Infrared transmitters were installed at operationally important points on the routes, which send a unique location code when the bus passes and, together with distance counters and opening contacts on the doors, enable location to be determined. At some stops, passengers are shown the expected arrival time of the bus. In addition, the traffic lights have been adjusted so that the buses can influence the duration of the red and green phases.

Vehicle fleet

The ESWE traffic has more than 280 buses in daily use, including 10 electric buses (as per Jan. 2020). 159 are standard buses (length 12m) of which 59 are Euro 6 and 60 in LE (Low Entry) and 135 articulated buses (length 18m, with the exception of 2 MAN Lion's City A40s with 18.75m, one of which is four-door). Due to the Euro 6 emissions standard, many old vehicles have been replaced by new ones and many have been retrofitted. ESWE Verkehr was the first European company to have been using buses with the EURO 6 standard since 2012. 3 Mercedes-Benz O530 Citaro 2 Euro 6 articulated buses celebrated their European premiere here.

The former sister company of ESWE Verkehr, WiBus (Wiesbadener Busgesellschaft mbH) was completely returned to ESWE Verkehr on January 1, 2015, so that the entire vehicle fleet was integrated into ESWE Verkehr.

By 2022, Wiesbaden's public transport system (ESWE Verkehr) should be completely emission-free on the streets of the state capital; for this purpose, a Europe-wide tender for the delivery and partial maintenance of 220 (+ 1 prototype) e-buses, with exclusively electric drive in battery operation and charging infrastructure, which ran until October 18, 2017. The test should start with 1 prototype in 2018 and from 2019 55 electric buses should be delivered annually and replace the existing diesel fleet. The inner-city public transport in Wiesbaden would thus be the first of its size to be operated completely emission-free.

The tender period was extended and the first order was placed in April 2019. The contract was awarded to EvoBus (Daimler-Benz) with 56 electric buses, the renovation of the depot and the establishment of the charging infrastructure and charging management. The first ten eCitaro have been in use since December 2019, the other 46 are to be delivered in 2020. 64 e-Citaros are planned for 2021. The first 15 will receive lithium-ion batteries (lithium-nickel-manganese-cobalt-oxide cells). Each bus has twelve lithium polymer battery packs with a total capacity of 292 kWh. There are 8 batteries on the roof, the rest in the rear, which take up 4 seats. The range is 120 to 120 km. The drive power is 250 kW. There is no transmission. The other 41 eCitaro are to be equipped with solid-state batteries. These have a higher energy density of 441 kilowatt hours with seven battery packs. This means that the bus with electric heating can cover more than 200 kilometers in winter. The technology comes from the French cleantech company Blue Solutions and belongs to the Bolloré Group. The solid-state batteries contain neither cobalt nor rare earths, but need air cooling in order to be protected from high temperatures of 60 to 80 degrees Celsius. The batteries consist of copper, aluminum, lithium, polymers, a lithium salt, iron phosphate and carbon, raw materials with a stable supply secured by natural resources.

All electric buses are charged via a plug in the depot. The charging time is 4 to 8 hours.

Wiesbaden is also part of a project called H2Bus Rhein-Main which provided for the procurement of 4 fuel cell buses for Wiesbaden from mid-2019 , including 2 solo and 2 articulated buses from the manufacturer Autosan in Sanok (Poland). The range should be 300 km with a 15 minute filling. The necessary infrastructure was provided on the premises of ESWE Verkehr for 2.3 million euros in the form of a hydrogen filling station. Mainz 4 and Frankfurt am Main were also to receive 3 of these fuel cell buses as part of the 6-year project. The joint order was canceled in January 2020 because the Polish manufacturer Autosan cannot deliver.

Rates

The cities of Wiesbaden and Mainz have been forming a tariff community with the Mainz-Wiesbaden transport association (VMW) for many years . These include the neighboring towns of Hochheim , Bischofsheim Ginsheim-Gustavsburg , Zornheim and Walluf . Because the network area belongs to 2 federal states (Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate) with different supra-regional transport associations, Wiesbaden belongs to the RMV within the scope of tariff area 65 and, as part of the double honeycomb 300, to the RNN. Trips in Wiesbaden (and in the entire tariff area 65) as well as to other RMV tariff areas are subject to the RMV tariff, trips to the destination in the RNN are charged according to the RNN tariff. The necessary tickets are available at all machines , sales points and in the vehicles that sell tickets.

The pure traffic within tariff zone 65 (again with one exception in Bischofsheim and Ginsheim-Gustavsburg) is a special feature with price level 13. Annual and monthly tickets are a good deal cheaper here than in price level 3, and there are also trading cards the possibility of purchasing 5 single tickets with a discount of around 20% in advance sales at machines, in-house and other advance booking offices , which must then be validated at the start of the journey (collectible cards are also available in the RNN). The trading cards are full-value tickets and entitle you to use all RMV means of transport in tariff area 65. The vehicles from ESWE Verkehr and MVG have the necessary validators in their vehicles, they are on the platform at the train stations and validators are also on board in many ORN vehicles . For vehicles that also run in tariff zone 65 and that do not have a validator, these are validated by the driver using a stamp or by hand. The trading cards have grown historically and will be retained in the RMV with a view to a planned debit card .
