The museum train on the Aartalbahn

The Nassauische Touristik-Bahn (NTB) is a museum railway in Wiesbaden . The association was founded in 1986 and aims to give its passengers the most authentic possible picture of rail operations in the first years of the post-war period ( epoch III ) on a branch line . The NTB resulted in historic, typical of the era to 2009 trips in 1950s style car with steam by -Bespannung.

business

Since 1986 the Nassauische Touristik-Bahn has been running trains hauled by steam and diesel locomotives on the section of the Aartalbahn between Wiesbaden and Bad Schwalbach, which has been closed for regular rail traffic since 1983 . The trains have so far operated from Easter to the beginning of October every Sunday and public holiday between the Wiesbaden-Dotzheim and Hohenstein stations .

Wiesbaden-Dotzheim train station with historic railroad cars

At the end of May 2007, the bridge of an underpass behind the Wiesbaden-Dotzheim train station was so badly damaged that it had to be closed for operation. The route was thus interrupted directly behind the home station of the Nassau Tourist Railway, and the railway could no longer offer any trips until September 2008. Initially, the NTB only drove the section from Wiesbaden-Dotzheim to Eiserne Hand station , the start of train operations to Hahn-Wehen was delayed until July 2009 due to defective switches. On November 20, 2009, another truck damaged the bridge, which is why the Railway operations are suspended until further notice. Since there are defective switches in the Hohenstein and Bad Schwalbach stations , no passenger train traffic beyond Hahn-Wehen on the Aartalbahn is to be expected for the time being. The association has now leased the Aartalbahn in Hesse from Deutsche Bahn AG via its subsidiary Aartalbahn Infrastruktur gGmbH since November 1, 2014.

The association offers special trips on other routes, such as the Rhine in Flames to Koblenz . Nevertheless, the discontinuation of the regular museum trains brought the association into financial difficulties. With financial support from the city of Wiesbaden, at least the risk of insolvency could be averted.

As part of the “ Stadtbahn Wiesbaden ” project, a resumption of passenger traffic between Bad Schwalbach and Wiesbaden was discussed between 1998 and 2001 and between 2011 and 2013 . The current plans to reactivate the Aartalbahn for passenger transport also take into account the integration of the museum train operation.

vehicles

The association has two steam locomotives and three diesel locomotives.

Steam locomotive 50 3576

Steam locomotive 50 3576 of the Nassau Tourist Railway

The class 50 freight locomotive was built by Škoda in Pilsen in 1940 (factory no. 1185) and handed over to the Deutsche Reichsbahn as the 50 1106 . After the war it was stationed as a freight locomotive at various locations on the Deutsche Reichsbahn ; most recently at the Bw Nossen. In 1959 it was converted to the 50.35 series in RAW Stendal and was given the new company number 50 3576. In 1991 the machine was decommissioned and sold to the Gaildorf steam locomotive operating company. Later she drove for the Aalen railway transport company and for Schwaben Dampf eV before joining NTB in 2001. Due to technical problems with the boiler, the locomotive had to be shut down in July 2009 before the end of its regular investigation period in the following spring.

The locomotive can go 80 km / h forwards and backwards; the power is about 1700 psi. With full supplies, it weighs around 140 tons. These supplies are kept in a tender of the type 2'2'T26, which holds around 8 t of coal and 26 m³ of water.

The Tkp 4408 steam locomotive was built in 1955 in the Polish town of Chrzanow and was in service at the Nowa Huta Lenin Hut from 1955 to 1974 before it came to the Ruda Śląska Peace Hut . From there in 1990 the Nassauische Touristik-Bahn acquired the locomotive. The machine has an output of 800 hp. It reaches a top speed of 40 km / h. The locomotive has not been in service since 2001 and has been sold.

Diesel locomotive "V2" (MaK 650 D)

Diesel locomotive MaK 650 D in Dotzheim station

The diesel locomotive type MaK 650 D was built in 1958 and ran until 1994 in the Westphalian transport company from which it acquired NTB. The engine output is 650 hp; the 52-ton locomotive reaches a top speed of 70 km / h. Currently (May 2017) the locomotive is parked because the chassis needs to be revised and a general inspection is due.

More locomotives and vehicles

The club also owns a MaK 600 D diesel locomotive built in 1953 .

In two- train operation, the two diesel locomotives haul the second train and are available as a reserve locomotive if steam locomotives cannot be operated on the route (which runs largely through the forest) during long periods of heat due to the risk of forest fires or if the steam locomotives are not operational due to a technical defect. In addition, the diesel locomotives serve as push locomotives in bad weather conditions because the steam locomotives would otherwise not manage the steep 1:34 gradient - especially between the Chausseehaus stop and the Eiserne Hand station . Numerous historical passenger carriages (including so-called conversion wagons and Donnerbüchsen ) as well as some historical freight wagons belong to the NTB inventory.

Fire in a wagon

On the night of June 16, 2011, a historic saloon car parked in the Dotzheim train station burned down completely as a result of arson . The restoration of the collector's item “Kassel 27291” from 1929 was about to be completed. The on-site water supply proved to be difficult, but it was still possible to prevent the flames from spreading to a warehouse. The Wiesbaden fire brigade put the damage to the wagon at € 55,000, plus € 60,000 in damage to the neighboring hall, which was damaged by the heat. The fire was described as a severe blow for the railway enthusiasts.
