The cultural center Schlachthof (also called Schlachthof or Schlachter ) in Wiesbaden is located around 500 meters southeast of the main train station on the area of the former urban slaughterhouse and cattle yard.

The Schlachthof cultural center is an essential part of Wiesbaden's cultural life, it offers an alternative to the state capital's traditional "high culture program". A variety of rock, metal and punk concerts, music parties, poetry slams and readings for all age groups are offered. The slaughterhouse area enjoys an international reputation in the graffiti scene that extends far beyond Wiesbaden.

history

After the city closed the slaughterhouse, which was built in 1884, at the end of 1990 due to inefficiency and failure to comply with EC hygiene directives, and in the following years the meat wholesale and butcher shops were also relocated, most of the buildings on the extensive site were demolished. Only two halls remained and the 36-meter-high, historic, listed water tower built between 1897 and 1899.

The cultural center has been built in these remaining buildings since 1994. While the centrally located, large hall serves as a hostel for concert and rehearsal rooms, the smaller building, located near the sports office and opposite the large hall, is used as a skateboard "roll bunker" and to rent private rooms for various events. In the same building, the so-called creative factory, there are also rehearsal rooms for bands and the office of the Wiesbaden Young Socialists ( Jusos ).

Groups such as The Sisters of Mercy , Motörhead , Simple Minds , Apocalyptica , Dropkick Murphys , Die Fantastischen Vier , Die Toten Hosen , Bullet for My Valentine , Sportfreunde Stiller , Deichkind and Fettes Brot have already performed in the slaughterhouse . 450 events with 250,000 visitors take place here every year.

The slaughterhouse can be seen in the video "Wish I Had An Angel" by the Finnish band Nightwish , the video was produced in the large hall of the slaughterhouse, back then with singer Tarja Turunen .

According to its own information, the cultural center has had 1.5 million visitors so far and offers two rooms for events: the large concert hall for 2,400 people and the boiler house for 300 people. 28 rehearsal rooms for bands as well as two artist studios, a catering service and a pub, the 60/40, complete the offer. The slaughterhouse is a member of the State Association of Socio-Cultural Centers in Hesse (Laks e.V.).

In addition to numerous indoor events, the cultural center also held the three-day alternative festival “ Folklore Festival ” until 2015 , which took place every year on the last weekend in August on the slaughterhouse site. Until 2006, this festival was located in the park of Freudenberg Castle .

Leisure and culture park

The approximately 3 hectare fallow area around the historic water tower at the former slaughterhouse has been transformed into a leisure and culture park since October 2008 for around one million euros. With tree plantations and walkable lawns as well as a beach volleyball field, a boules court, a track for skateboarders and children's play equipment, this is also intended to appeal to young people in particular. This supplementary facility was inaugurated at the beginning of June 2009.

New hall construction

The large hall of the former slaughterhouse had to be closed in November 2010 due to structural and fire protection deficiencies. After a long discussion about design and financing, it was decided to build a new large hall in the immediate vicinity of the old building. The new hall was inaugurated on November 16, 2012 with a concert by the Wiesbaden ska band Frau Doktor . The small hall ("smokehouse"), as well as the bar with beer garden and office space moved into the renovated, listed water tower on March 12, 2015. The small event room is now called "Kesselhaus". The "old" hall was demolished in autumn 2015.
