Tarja Turunen
Tarja Turunen (born August 17, 1977 in Kitee , Finland ; full name Tarja Soile Susanna Turunen Cabuli ), also known outside of her homeland as Tarja , is a Finnish soprano and songwriter . Along with Tuomas Holopainen and Emppu Vuorinen she founded the Finnish 1996 symphonic metal - band Nightwish , who as the end of 2005 singer belonged. Due to her training as a classical singer, Turunen also sings metal pieces in the classical style. The combination of hard metal guitars and classic “operatic” vocals quickly inspired both critics and audiences at the end of the 1990s and was referred to as “Opera Metal”. The music style also inspired many other metal bands and singers. Since the end of her collaboration with Nightwish she has dedicated herself to her solo career under the name Tarja in the field of symphonic rock and symphonic metal with classical "operatic" singing as well as with the band Harus in the field of classical music.
biography
Childhood and youth
Tarja Turunen grew up with an older and a younger brother in Puhos, a village belonging to the eastern Finnish town of Kitee . She began her musical education at the age of six with piano lessons. A little later she started singing in a local choir. At the comprehensive school in Kitee, she quickly became famous and infamous for singing along on every project. She was eventually bullied by some envious schoolmates . As a result, Turunen became more and more shy and withdrawn; after all, she only had contact with a few boys. Her music teacher at the time, Plamen Dimov, later recalled that he only had to give Turunen the notes for one song; she could sing it straight away, while he first had to practice the piece three or four times with other - quite talented - students. So that other students also got their chance, he organized as many performances and projects as possible outside of school for Turunen. At the age of 15 she made her first major appearance as a soloist at a Christmas concert in front of 1,000 spectators.

After completing comprehensive school, she moved to a music high school in Savonlinna ; at the age of 18 she moved to Kuopio to study music at the Sibelius Academy . When she was asked by her former schoolmate Tuomas Holopainen during the Christmas break in 1996 whether she would like to take part in his acoustic music project, she immediately agreed. When the first demo was recorded , it turned out that Turunen's voice had become much more powerful through the classical singing lessons than Holopainen remembered from school.
During the band rehearsals that followed, Emppu Vuorinen increasingly used an electric guitar instead of the acoustic guitar. Eventually a drummer joined the band with Jukka Nevalainen and Holopainen decided to turn Nightwish into a metal band . Holopainen later stated that the band members gradually found that Turunen's voice was too powerful and too dramatic for acoustic music. They decided that the music had to be great too. As a founding member of Nightwish, Turunen was also a style-defining element for the band. In September 1997 Nightwish recorded another demo with which Holopainen was finally able to convince the Finnish record label Spinefarm Records to release a debut album. The demo was the core of the 1997 debut album called Angels Fall First . To the surprise of everyone involved, the album made it into the top 40 of the Finnish charts, so the band started giving concerts in December 1997. Due to her involvement in the band, Turunen was soon no longer able to concentrate sufficiently on her academic activities and eventually interrupted her studies.
In 1998 Turunen also sang pieces by Wagner, Verdi and other composers as a member of the festival choir at the Savonlinna Opera Festival .
The Nightwish era
In 1998 Nightwish released their second album Oceanborn . This album contained hardly any references to folk or acoustic music, the music concentrated more on Turunen's dramatic vocals and fast and melodic keyboard and guitar lines. The single "Sacrament of Wilderness" made it to number 1 in the Finnish charts and stayed there for a few weeks. Due to this success, the album, originally only released in Finland, was released internationally in the spring of 1999. With the MCD "Sleeping Sun (Four Ballads of the Eclipse)" Nightwish first became known in Germany. In 1999 Nightwish went on a European tour as the opening act for Rage and thus created a fan base outside of Finland.
When the Finnish band Waltari , this time as a death metal band, performed the music ballet Evankeliumi (also known as Evangelicum ) with dancers, choir and orchestra as well as two (classical) soloists at the Finnish National Opera , Turunen became one of the two soloists involved. Starting in October 1999, she took part in ten sold-out performances in the role of a guardian angel .
In 2000 and 2001 she was busy with Nightwish with the recordings for the album Wishmaster and the EP Over the Hills and Far Away and the subsequent tour. In September 2001 she enrolled at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe , where she trained as a soloist . The reasons for going to Karlsruhe were, on the one hand, the good reputation of the university, on the other hand, the fact that it is now well known in Finland and the fact that some people no longer attend the Finnish university because of their membership in a metal band was taken seriously as a classical singer. At the university in Karlsruhe, however, she was accepted as a classical singer who mainly earns her living with metal music. Her professor there in particular did not see this as a flaw.
In 2002 Nightwish recorded the album Century Child . As with the previous albums, keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen first wrote the pieces and sent Turunen the lyrics and a demo recording with the instrumental tracks that had already been recorded. With the help of the demo recording, she then designed her vocal lines and the choir passages to form the melody. Her singing was then recorded in the Finnvox Studios music studio in Helsinki. With this album, Nightwish's musical style also changed, which is why Turunen began to change her way of singing (see section "Singing style" → "Development"). At the request of her future husband Marcelo Cabuli, she also worked on the solo album of the Argentine bassist Beto Vázquez called Beto Vázquez Infinity , although she actually wanted to concentrate entirely on her studies and had consistently declined all other offers for guest contributions.

In the same year Tarja Turunen was on the road with some musician friends in South America to perform the song concert Noche Escandinava ( Spanish "Scandinavian Night"), again in front of sold out houses. The program included art songs by German and Scandinavian composers such as Jean Sibelius , Richard Strauss and Johannes Brahms , which Turunen wanted to bring closer to the South American audience because composers from Scandinavia and especially Finland were little known there. She then went on a world tour with Nightwish to the globally successful album Century Child . After the tour, the band took a long break for the first time in their history, which Turunen used to return to Karlsruhe and finish their studies.
At the beginning of 2003 she married Marcelo Cabuli, the boss of the Argentine record label NEMS Enterprises, which specializes in metal, whom she met as chief promoter on the South American tour for the album Wishmaster . In November of that year Turunen worked with Nightwish on the recordings for the album Once , which was then released in mid-2004. With the album Nightwish reached number 1 for the first time, both in the German album charts and in the European Top 100. This was followed by their world tour "Once Upon a Tour", which lasted until the end of 2005, during which from August 2004 also for the first time in major concerts have been given in the United States . Overall, she received with Nightwish in the years 1998-2004 7 gold and 2 platinum just through the release of singles.
At Christmas 2004 she released the solo single "Yhden enkelin unelma" ( Finnish : "An angel's dream"), which achieved gold status in her native Finland. A year later, just in time for Christmas 2005, the single made it back to number 1 in the Finnish charts. In spring 2005, she recorded the duet "Leaving You for Me" with Martin Kesici and an accompanying music video , which was the single for Kesicis Album So What… !? has been published.
Separation from Nightwish
The first change in the line-up of Nightwish came in September 2001 when Sami Vänskä was forced to leave the band because his long-time friend Tuomas Holopainen was no longer able to continue working with him.
Another change was imminent when the relationship between Tuomas Holopainen and Turunen's husband and manager Marcelo Cabuli and the relationship between Holopainen and Turunen himself deteriorated over the following years . Turunen therefore announced in December 2004 to the other band members that after a new album planned for 2006/2007 and the subsequent tour, she wanted to get out of the band and devote herself to her solo career. According to her husband, Turunen had agreed to release her first solo album only after the new Nightwish studio album. After the last joint concert on October 21, 2005 ( End of an Era ) , Tuomas Holopainen gave the singer a letter that the other members had also signed. With this she was informed that the band no longer wanted to work with her. This letter was later published on the band's website. In this letter Turunen was accused, among other things, of staying away from rehearsals too often and of having behaved like divas; her husband was also held responsible for her behavior.
In the period that followed, Turunen gave a statement on the open letter and several interviews in which she explained her point of view. She was particularly concerned that after nine years of working together, Holopainen had found no other way than to end the separation with an open letter. She stated that she could not find herself in the allegations and asked to keep her husband out of the argument. Due to the continuing media interest in the separation, Cabulis also issued a statement in which he explained the events from his point of view.
Despite the circumstances of the separation, the artistic appreciation between the former band members has remained. Holopainen explained that as a successor for Turunen no similarly trained singer came into question, because Turunen was extremely good in her kind of singing and therefore could not be replaced by a similar singer. He also stated that he wished he could be friends with Turunen again one day. Turunen stated in an interview in October 2007 that she was very proud of her past with Nightwish, that the remaining band members were extraordinarily talented and that she wished Nightwish all the best.
Solo career
Since Turunen initially expected to work on another Nightwish album, she had planned the year 2006 for a few concerts and the release of her (solo) Christmas album Henkäys ikuisuudesta (Finnish "touch of eternity"), which had already been recorded in 2005 . In December 2005 she gave some Christmas concerts in Finland, Germany, Spain and Romania. At the Savonlinna Opera Festival in 2006 she appeared as a soloist and sang together with the Finnish tenor Raimo Sirkiä the arias “ O mio babbino caro ” from Giacomo Puccini's Gianni Schicchi and “Libiamo ne 'lieti calici” from Giuseppe Verdi's La traviata and that Theme song from Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical The Phantom of the Opera . In November of that year she gave a concert called Tomorrow's Child together with the Tapiola Choir for the benefit of the UNICEF Children's Fund . After the release of her Christmas album Henkäys ikuisuudesta , at the end of 2006 she again gave a few Christmas concerts. This earned her a nomination for the Finnish music award Emma as best soloist of 2006.

Contrary to some speculation, she did not concentrate fully on classical music after separating from Nightwish. Since August 2006, she has also been working on the release of her next solo album, with which she began her actual solo project. It was the first time that Turunen could write songs himself or revise them extensively. She was supported by some professional songwriters . She had the choir and orchestra arrangements written by film music composer James Dooley . This solo album can be classified stylistically in the field of symphonic rock or symphonic metal with classic, “operatic” singing.
On October 26, 2007 the single "I Walk Alone" was released, before the album entitled My Winter Storm was released on November 16, 2007 and the second single called "Die Alive" was released on March 7, 2008. Since the Christmas album was made during the Nightwish era, My Winter Storm was often viewed as a debut album. It achieved gold status in its home country Finland as well as double platinum status in Russia and gold status in Germany, Hungary and the Czech Republic. The album earned her a nomination for "Best Finnish Artist" at the Finnish Emma Awards 2007; for the German Echo (2007) she was nominated in the category “Newcomer of the Year”.
After the “Warm-Up Concerts” in November and December 2007, she began the My Winter Storm tour on May 7, 2008 through Europe, South America and North America. Performances also took place at the Wave-Gotik-Treffen in Leipzig, the Metal Female Voices Fest in Belgium, and the " Gods of Metal " festival in Italy.

The touring band consists of some musicians who - like Kiko Loureiro ( Angra ), Alex Scholpp ( Farmer Boys ) or Doug Wimbish - were already involved in the studio recordings or in the writing of the songs. Maria Ilmoniemi, who had already accompanied Turunen at the Christmas concerts, as well as Max Lilja (Ex- Apocalyptica ) and Mike Terrana also joined . Terrana and Turunen first met in 1999 when Nightwish was opening act for the band Rage , for which Terrana was the drummer at the time. In addition, Tarja was accompanied at times by her brother Toni Turunen, who took over the male vocal part in the song "The Phantom of the Opera". Oliver Holzwarth (touring musician with Blind Guardian ) also joined later to replace Doug Wimbish as bassist while he was on tour with Living Color .
In December 2008 Turunen took part in Doro Pesch's “25th Anniversary Concert”, at which Doro and Tarja sang the pieces “The Seer” and “Walking with the Angels” together. These duets were released on the fan edition of My Winter Storm , released in early 2009 , and on the new Doro album Fear No Evil .
In December 2009 she recorded her vocal contribution to a duet with Klaus Meine under the song title "The Good Die Young", which was released on February 26, 2010 as the first single for the Scorpions album Sting in the Tail . On March 27th, she performed with the Scorpions on the ZDF program “ Wetten, dass ..? "To perform" The Good Die Young "in front of an audience of millions in Europe.
On February 3, 2010, the recordings for their second rock album began in the Petrax Studios in Hollola , Finland. On July 19, the first single "Falling Awake" was released. The new album What Lies Beneath was released on September 3, 2010. In contrast to its predecessor My Winter Storm , Turunen produced the album himself and was involved in the composition of all the songs on the CD. The tour belonging to the album also included appearances at rock festivals. For example, Turunen performed at Wacken Open Air on August 7, 2010, before the album was released , where she also performed two of her new songs from the What Lies Beneath album . It was Turunen's first concert as a solo artist at Wacken Open Air, after she had performed there with Nightwish in 2000, 2001 and 2005. What lies Beneath achieved gold status in France. The album was Tarja's first major success in the US, reaching number 24 on the US Top Heatseekers.
On August 12, 2011, it was announced on Turunen's official website that, after a long collaboration (since 2006) with the Finnish musicians Kalevi Kiviniemi (organ), Marzi Nyman (guitar) and Markku Krohn (percussion) , they are starting a project called Harus (Finnish Stag ) has merged. In this project, she wants to concentrate entirely on her classic roots. In the winter of 2011 a CD and DVD with this formation was released with the title In Concert - Live At Sibelius Hall . In November 2012 Turunen began the vocal recordings for their third rock album.

Turunen had her first child, a daughter, at the end of 2012. The father is her husband and manager Marcelo Cabuli.
For the remix album Tubular Beats by Mike Oldfield and Torsten Stenzel , which was released on February 1, 2013, Tarja Turunen recorded the vocals for the song Never Too Far .
End of August 2013 Tarja's third rock album was released Colors in the Dark ( Engl. "Colors in the Dark").
After a prequel entitled The Brightest Void was released on June 3, 2016 , the fourth rock album The Shadow Self was released on August 5, 2016 . On the same day Tarja performed for the second time in her solo career at the Wacken Open Air Festival.
Singing style
development
At the same time as attending the music high school in Savonlinna, Tarja Turunen took private classical singing lessons from the age of 17. After school she began studying church music at the Sibelius Academy , where she studied piano as well as singing. However, when her engagement at Nightwish did not leave her enough time for her studies, she interrupted it.
From 2000 to 2003 she trained as a soloist at the State University of Music in Karlsruhe, specializing in classical singing in the form of art songs . Turunen originally applied for a choir education, but at the entrance exam she caught the attention of the renowned Japanese singer and professor Mitsuko Shirai . This encouraged Turunen to train as a soloist with her.
As a classical singer, Turunen always sings with classical singing technique. She later explained that in the early days of Nightwish it was difficult to combine classical singing with the hard metal sound in such a way that on the one hand it allowed her freedom of movement on stage, but on the other hand it did not damage her vocal cords. The classical technique helps her singing so that she can play with her voice; therefore she decided against additional lessons in rock / pop singing.
At the end of the 1990s, the combination of hard and fast guitar riffs with classic female lead vocals caused a stir in the metal scene. The then new musical style of Nightwish quickly won over both critics and audiences. Since 1998, the name “ Opera Metal ” has gradually been established for this symphonic metal style . The term “Opera Metal” is misleading as Tarja Turunen does not see herself as an opera singer. Although she has already performed excerpts from operas at the Savonlinna Opera Festival, she repeatedly emphasizes that opera singing cannot be done on the side and that she first has to train intensively in order to be able to perform an entire opera perfectly - without a microphone. When asked how the association “Opera Metal” might have come about, Turunen replied in an interview that the two musical styles metal and opera had some similarities despite the obvious differences:
“The scenes are very similar. There are a lot of people who would never go to an opera and the same goes for metal. But the real fans are incredibly loyal. And both directions are bombastic and express strong feelings. "
From the first Nightwish album Angels Fall First (1997) on, Turunen's singing was described by critics with adjectives like "angelic" or "Valkyrie-like [ sic ]". Associations with the Valkyries figure were also taken up in the remake of the video for the single Sleeping Sun , in which Turunen wandered singing across a battlefield, as if she wanted to lead the dead warriors to the afterlife.
On later albums the vocals became technically more complex. On the Nightwish album Oceanborn (1998) Turunen brought her classical vocal training much more strongly. So they used in the play "Passion and the Opera" a staccato - coloratura that "the aria cooks Hell revenge in my heart ," the Queen of the Night in Mozart's Magic Flute recalls; there is also a well-trained breathing technique z. B. in the song "Sleeping Sun". At the time, she initially had serious concerns that her vocal training had not progressed far enough to technically master the pieces.
The cover version of " Over the Hills and Far Away " (2001) was a challenge of a different kind , as Turunen had to sing very low here, far below the vocal range of an average soprano . In an interview with Breakout magazine, she reports that the band members in the recording studio were shaking with fits of laughter as she tried to sing herself on the vocal lines. A lasting benefit of the efforts was that she was able to significantly expand her vocal range in the lower range, which was also noticeable on the following albums.
For the album Century Child (2002) she already experimented with a "rockier" sounding singing voice, although she retained the classical singing technique, but z. B. sang with less vibrato. To the satisfaction of the singer, however, the style was first changed on the album Once (2004):
“I'm very happy with Once because I've tried to change my vocal style in Nightwish since Century Child, because Tuomas asked for it, because he thought the songs demanded it. [...] and I failed to do that on Century Child. I wasn't very happy with it. […] It was really hard work as I've been a classical singer for 10 years so it was hard to start over and focus on other styles. Of course I still sing with classical technique, I never sing with my bad speaking voice, I can no longer do that. "
This overall somewhat deeper, “rockier” vocals on Once and on the song “In the Picture”, which she recorded with the Nuclear Blast Allstars , was mostly welcomed by critics as a refreshing change.
Her first solo album My Winter Storm (2007) contains pieces that are more like classical art songs as well as rock and metal songs. Turunen therefore sings some pieces on the album in a distinctly classical style, but most of them with a "rocky" singing voice. It happens more often that she starts a song rocking and then switches to a distinctly classical style of singing for sweeping melodies.
“With her classically trained voice, Tarja bravely flies over orchestral sounds and brute guitars. Like a phoenix from the ashes [...] it takes off again and again to sweeping melodies, sometimes inspired by polyphonic female choirs. "
In an interview, she stated that she was able to use her vocal range to the full for the first time in a single album:
“Yes, when I sing, I put myself in the mood and the feelings behind it. […] I used a really large vocal range on this album - around three octaves - because every song has a different mood and that should be reflected. "
Voice pitch and range
Turunen sings in the soprano vocal range (more precisely: lyrical soprano ), but she also reaches the mezzo-soprano and alto range.
“I have sung pieces from the mezzo-soprano repertoire for many years and that's why I still have a pretty low vocal register for a lyric soprano today . Nowadays I see myself as a light lyric soprano . "
In the course of her career so far, Turunen has developed a vocal range of three octaves . A wide vocal range is also on the album My Winter Storm , where in the song "The Seer" with the tone of the f small octave their lowest so far sound sung and in another song with the tone d '' 'the three octave to date highest note sung on one of her albums.
Other examples of singing in the higher vocal range include: B. "Stargazers" (by Oceanborn ), "The Phantom of the Opera" and "She is My Sin" (by Wishmaster ); as examples of singing in the lower vocal range can e.g. B. "Over the Hills and Far Away" (from the EP of the same name ) and "Ever Dream" (from Century Child ) are mentioned.
reception
Turunen's singing is described by critics as remarkably powerful and at the same time soulful. Views differ as to whether her voice sounds too trained or operatic for metal singing. Often, however, critics who don't normally like classical singing also find that their voice goes unusually well with the metal pieces she sings.
Turunen was until the end of the collaboration with Nightwish as the "figurehead" of the band, while band leader Holopainen is regarded as their "soul". It is widely believed that she was a major contributor to Nightwish's success. The style of music known as "Opera Metal" also inspired many other metal bands and singers.
A very large media interest caused the public separation from Nightwish, whereby Turunen's character was also the subject of public discussion. The remaining band members cited as one reason for the separation that Turunen had become greedy for money.
"Unfortunately, money, business and all those things that have nothing to do with feelings have become much more important to you."
Turunen's husband, Cabuli, replied to fans' questions on the subject that the profit sharing was determined in the band's early years. Other band members would have received a higher profit share, which Turunen never complained about.
"For sure in her case, money is not coming first in her book of life."
"In her case, I can safely say that money is not a top priority in her book of life."
Turunen has the greatest degree of awareness and therefore the most intense media coverage in her home country Finland. In December 2003, along with other people of great public interest, she was invited to the Presidential Palace by Finnish President Tarja Halonen on the occasion of Finnish Independence Day. This event was broadcast live to 2 million Finnish television viewers. When she performed various versions of the Finnish national anthem “ Maamme ” (Finnish “Our Country”) in December 2007, accompanied by the Tapiola Sinfonietta chamber orchestra, to celebrate the 90th anniversary of Finnish independence, the concert was also broadcast live on Finnish television.
In Germany, their fame has so far been largely limited to the metal and black scene . She achieved a wider response in the German media in connection with the Echo nomination and on November 30, 2007, when she had the opportunity to watch the boxer's farewell fight with 8.8 million ZDF TV viewers with her live performance of "I Walk Alone" Regina Halmich to join in.
Since Turunen only operates pure classical music in the form of side projects (Christmas concerts, Noche Escandinava, Savonlinna Opera Festival), it does not generate much media coverage in the classical music scene. But it is also popular there, because it attracts a young audience that would otherwise be less interested in classical music, and because its popularity means it often causes sold-out performances.
In 2017, Tarja Turunen became part of 60 official Finnish-representative emoji (The Voice) .
