Kalevi Kiviniemi
Kalevi Kiviniemi (born June 30, 1958 in Jalasjärvi ) is a Finnish concert organist and composer. He is known for Finnish and French organ music, which he has played and recorded on period organs, including in Notre-Dame de Paris . He is also a great improviser .
Life
Kalevi Kiviniemi passed his exams as a cantor and organist in 1981 and continued studying for the concert diploma at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, literary play with Eero Väätäinen, improvisation with Olli Linjama. Kalevi Kiviniemi's international career began in the early 1990s with concerts in Japan and London. He has given concerts in Europe, the USA, Asia, Australia and the Philippines.
Kiviniemi performed several times in the Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral . His first concert in 2000, with Olivier Latry ( titulaire des grands orgue ), was recorded for television. His first solo concert was in 2002.
In 2009 he played organ transcriptions in the Konzerthaus Dortmund . In autumn 2010 he gave concerts in the Laurenskerk in Rotterdam, at the International Düsseldorf Organ Festival at the Rieger Organ in St. Lambertus , at the Wuppertal Organ Days at the Seifert Organ of the Beyenburger Klosterkirche , at the Mebold Organ in St. Martin Idstein and at XII. International Organ Autumn in Straelen .
Kiviniemi was a member of the jury at international organ competitions, such as the 1996 International Organ Weeks in Nuremberg , 1998 in Capri , 2001 at the Speyer Cathedral and 2005 at the International Organ Week in Korschenbroich . He held master classes, for example at the Ruhr University in Bochum . He was Artistic Director of Lahti Organ Week in Finland from 1991 to 2001.
Recordings
2010 Kiviniemis discography includes more than 140 titles, including recordings on historical organs in the United States, Japan, the Philippines, Australia, Italy, France, Switzerland and Germany, for example, the Cavaillé-Coll - Organ of St-Ouen de Rouen . Kiviniemi was the first to record all of Jean Sibelius's organ works .

Many of his recordings have won awards. Improvisation became the Star Recording of The Organ, Visions , Finnish Organ Music magazine in 1999 and received the Janne Prize for the best Finnish solo recording. His CD Lakeuden Ristin Urut was voted best organ album in the USA in 2009.

Awards
Kalevi Kiviniemi received the Luonnotar Prize at the Sibelius Festival in Lahti in 2003 and the Organum Society Prize in 2004 for his services to Finnish organ music. In 2009 he received the State Prize for Music in Finland for his life's work.
