Aulis Sallinen
Aulis Sallinen (born April 9, 1935 in Salmi ) is a Finnish composer .
Live and act
Aulis Sallinen was born in Salmi on Lake Ladoga in 1935 ( annexed by the Soviet Union in 1940). From 1955 he studied at the Sibelius Academy under Aarre Merikanto and Joonas Kokkonen , where he graduated in 1960. From 1960 to 1970 Sallinen was artistic director of the Radion sinfoniaorkestri (RSO). From 1965 to 1976 he taught composition and composition at the Sibelius Academy. From 1971 to 1976 he was President of the Finnish Composers Association.
In 1978 Sallinen received the Nordic Council Music Prize for his opera Ratsumies . In 1983 he was awarded the Wihuri Sibelius Prize together with Krzysztof Penderecki .

- Ratsumies (Der Reitersmann) , opera in 3 acts (1973/74), Paavo Haavikko , commissioned by the city of Savonlinna for the 500th anniversary of the traditional Olavinlinna Castle, a festival venue
- Punainen viiva (The Red Line) , opera in 2 acts (1976–78), based on the novel of the same name by Ilmari Kianto ; Premiere. 1978 in the National Opera Helsinki; later also at Covent Garden Opera House, London
- The King goes to France , opera in 3 acts (two parts), libretto Paavo Haavikko , premiere. on July 7, 1984 at the opera festival in Savonlinna
- Kullervo , opera in 2 acts (1986–88), is based on an episode of the Finnish national epic Kalevala by Elias Lönnrot and the play of the same name by Aleksis Kivi from 1864. The opera was in February 25, 1992 Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles premiered
