Paavo Juhani Haavikko (born January 25, 1931 in Helsinki ; † October 6, 2008 there ) was a Finnish writer .

life and work

Paavo Haavikko made his debut in 1951 with the collection of poems Tiet etäisyyksiin . In 1960 his first play, Münchhausen, appeared . In 1964, his texts in the collection of short stories Lasi Claudius Civiliksen salaliittolaisten pöydällä caused a sensation. He had further success with the play Sulka (1970). Paavo Haavikko also wrote the libretto for the Finnish operas Ratsumies (1974) and Kuningas länee Ranskaan (1984) by Aulis Sallinen .

From 1967 to 1983 Paavo Haavikko worked alongside his literary work as a literary director for the Otava publishing house and founded the Art House publishing group, of which he was managing director from 1989 to 2001. In addition, Paavo Haavikko took a critical stance on social issues and published numerous articles in newspapers and magazines on current political issues and literature.

Awards

Paavo Haavikko has received numerous literary prizes, including the 1963 Eino Leino Prize (which he did not accept), the Aleksis Kivi Prize (1966), the Neustadt International Prize for Literature (1984), the Nordic Prize of Swedish Academy (1993) and the Poeta Finlandiae award as Poet of the Year 1996. Also in 1969 he became the youngest honorary doctorate from the University of Helsinki .
