Adriano Banchieri (Adriano di Bologna) (born September 3, 1568 in Bologna ; † 1634 there ; born Tommaso Banchieri ) was an Italian Benedictine monk , organist and composer .

life and work

Banchieri was baptized Tommaso on October 3, 1568. His parents were Antonio de Banchieri from Lucca and his wife Caterina. Tommaso entered the Benedictine order of the Olivetans in Bologna in 1587 . On September 8, 1589, he was dressed, began the novitiate and took the name Adriano . On September 16, 1590, he took the monk's vows. Banchieri took composition lessons from Gioseffo Guami in the first years of his monastic life . .

From 1592 he worked as an organist in various monasteries of his order, so in 1592 in SS. Bartolomeo e Ponziano in Lucca, 1593 in San Benedetto in Siena and from 1594 in S. Michele in Bosco (near Bologna). Here he held the official position of organist from 1596. He took the same position in 1600 in Santa Maria in Imola and in 1604 in San Pietro in Gubbio . After staying in Santa Elena in Venice and Santa Maria in Organo in Verona in 1605 , he returned to S. Michele in Bosco. Here he promoted culture and music and in 1615 founded the Accademia dei Floridi, the immediate forerunner of the Accademia Filarmonica in Bologna. Claudio Monteverdi visited him in 1620. Dia Akademie disbanded in 1623 and was re-established as the Accademia dei Filomusi under the direction of Girolamo Giacobbi . He later retired to the monastery of San Bernardo, where he died in 1634 after an apoplexy .

Banchieri is considered one of the most important music theorists of the 17th century. He is very open to all innovations and was one of the first to use the terms “piano” (p) and “forte” (f) in the music text. He was in general a pioneer in the accuracy of performance instructions for the interpreter and thus strengthened the role of the composer. He was also probably one of the first to use a baton in conducting.

Banchieri was a very prolific composer. He created secular and sacred music of all genres. Banchieri's madrigal books were particularly well received by his contemporaries . The works it contains can be seen as early forms of musical theater .
