Claude Gervaise

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Claude Gervaise (* around 1510 in Paris (?); † after 1558 there (?)) Was a French gambist and composer of the Renaissance.

Life

Presumably he lived in the French capital and probably worked as a musician in the court orchestra of King Franz I.

In addition to a few four-part chansons , he mainly created a number of polyphonic dance pieces in the folk style, which were extremely popular in high society during his time in Paris. He also arranged the Danseries by Pierre Attaignant and expanded the dances with his own pieces; he preferred Pavane and Gaillarde .

In 1935 Francis Poulenc arranged works by Gervaise in the seven-movement suite française d'après Claude Gervaise for piano or twelve-member chamber ensemble.
