Gustave Reese

Gustave Reese (born November 29, 1899 in New York City , † September 7, 1977 in Berkeley ) was an American musicologist .

Reese mainly taught in New York. His research relates to music of the Middle Ages and Renaissance music . His most important publications are Music in the Middle Ages from 1940 and Music in the Renaissance from 1954. Both works are still among the most important works in their respective subject area.

Life

Reese originally studied law at New York University , where he graduated in 1921. He then began studying music, which he successfully completed in 1930 as a Bachelor of Music ( BM , B.Mus. Or Mus.B ). Three years before graduating, he had already started teaching Medieval and Renaissance music at NYU, which he did until 1974. He retired in 1973 .

In 1934 Reese was a co-founder of the " American Musicological Society " (AMS), which he chaired from 1950 to 1952. He also held a position in the International Musicological Society (IMS). In 1962 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

In 1974 he married the cookbook author Carol Truax, who was also the Executive Director of Fine Arts at Colorado College and later a fine arts consultant at the State University of New York .
