Pierre Attaingnant

Pierre Attaingnant (also: Attaignant , Atteignant and Latinized Attingens ) (* around 1494 , † around 1552 in Paris ) was a French sheet music printer , music publisher and bookseller in Paris. From around 1527 to 1549 he was the editor of many compilations.

Life

The dates of his birth and death are different, presumably he was born in northern France in 1494 and died in Paris in 1552. The surname is mainly given as an attendant , but other spellings such as B. Attaignant, Ataignant, Atignan (t) etc. are known.

He published many works by French composers, especially chansons . From 1528 to 1552, more than 50 collections of chansons were published. Among other things, he published the works of Pierre Passereau . He also published some “dance books” , mainly containing pieces for the lute . Around 1527/1528 he invented a variant of sheet music printing that allowed printing in one operation. Every note mark, every note type (see also type ) was surrounded by a small segment of the note lines, so that the entire note image could be put together like a mosaic.

Attaignant produced 1000 and more copies per edition. With his variant of sheet music printing, he was a pioneer and model for many sheet music prints of the 16th and 17th centuries and held the royal monopoly until 1552, which he then lost to Robert Ballard and Adrian Le Roy ( Le Roy & Ballard ).

His best-known collection, Dixhuit basses dances , was probably created with the help of a “PB”, and contains basses danses as well as pavans , galliards and branles as well as chanson adaptations (such as “Destre amoureux” and “Tant que vivray” in Tres breve et familiere introduction ) and further lute pieces.

After his death, his widow Marie (Lescaloppier) continued the business until 1558.

Attaignant is associated with the creation of the French song Tourdion .
