Robert Ballard (music publisher)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Robert Ballard (* around 1525/30; † 1588 in Paris ) was a French music publisher .

He gained importance as a co-owner of the publishing house Le Roy & Ballard in Paris, which he founded in Paris in 1551 together with his cousin Adrian Le Roy .

On February 16, 1552, Le Roy & Ballard received the monopoly of the music publishing business from King Henri II , which had previously been held by Pierre Attaignant . In the second half of the 16th century alone, Le Roy & Ballard published around 3,000 works in 350 editions.

After Le Roy's death, the monopoly passed to the Ballard family alone, who were able to defend it until 1790. Ballard's sons stayed in the music business: Pierre (died 1639) took over the publishing house, initially together with his mother Lucrèce Dugué, while Robert (II) established himself as a successful lutenist, composer for the lute and lute teacher (among others at the royal court).
