Gabriel Pierné
Henri Constant Gabriel Pierné (born August 16, 1863 in Metz , † July 17, 1937 in Ploujean ) was a French composer and conductor .
Life
Gabriel Pierné studied at the Paris Conservatory with Antoine François Marmontel , Albert Lavignac , Émile Durand , César Franck and Jules Massenet . In 1882 he won the Prix de Rome with the cantata Edith and then worked from 1890 to 1898 as organist at Ste-Clotilde . In 1903 he became the deputy of Édouard Colonne as head of the Concerts Colonne named after him , which he conducted alone from 1910 to 1934. As a conductor he achieved great fame, which he used to perform numerous contemporary works (by Claude Debussy , Maurice Ravel , Albert Roussel , Igor Stravinsky and Darius Milhaud ). In 1919 he conducted the world premiere of the Symphony by Louis Vierne , and in 1921 that of the Third Symphony by Georges Enescu . In 1924 he was elected to succeed Théodore Dubois in the Académie des Beaux-Arts .
He composed six operas , several ballets and pantomimes , oratorios , orchestral and chamber music works as well as pieces for organ , harp and piano . Stylistically, his music can be assigned to the late Romantic period .
