Antoine-François Marmontel (born July 16, 1816 in Clermont-Ferrand , † January 15, 1898 in Paris ) was a French composer and music teacher .

Life

Marmontel studied at the Paris Conservatory with Pierre Zimmermann , Jean-François Lesueur and Jacques Fromental Halévy . From 1848 to 1887 he taught there as a piano teacher. His students included Georges Bizet , Vincent d'Indy , Francis Planté , Louis Diémer , Émile Paladilhe , Albert Lavignac , Claude Debussy and Marguerite Long . Marmontel was close friends with the composer George Onslow, also from Clermont-Ferrand .

In addition to sonatas and nocturnes , he mainly composed etudes for piano lessons and fifty salon etudes for concert use.

His son Antonin Marmontel also became known as a pianist, composer and piano teacher.
