Tuomas Lauri Johannes Holopainen (* 25. December 1976 in Kitee ) is a Finnish composer , music producer , keyboard player , main songwriter and founding member of the Finnish symphonic metal - band Nightwish .
biography
Holopainen has been playing the piano since he was eight and the clarinet since he was nine . After school he studied these two instruments as well as tenor saxophone and music theory at a music college. In September 1992 he was taken as an exchange student in Kansas City to a concert by Metallica and Guns N 'Roses , which had a strong impact on his musical career. During this time he played in the bands Darkwoods My Betrothed and Nattvindens Gråt . However, he really wanted to start his own band because he wanted to write and contribute music himself. This idea represents the birth of Nightwish in the summer of 1996. At the campfire he asked Emppu Vuorinen and Tarja Turunen if they wanted to take part in this then purely acoustic project. After hearing the quality of Tarja's operatic voice, Holopainen decided to turn Nightwish into a metal band .
Besides Nightwish, Holopainen is active in various bands, currently for example in the dark rock band For My Pain ... and Timo Rautiainen's band . He also works occasionally with other bands (such as on the album Love and Other Disasters by Sonic Syndicate ).
He has an endorsement contract with the Japanese keyboard manufacturer KORG .
In April 2014 Holopainen's solo album The Life and Times of Scrooge was released, which is based on the comic book Onkel Dagobert - His Life, His Billions by Don Rosa .
He has been married to the Finnish pop singer Johanna Kurkela since October 28, 2015 . Together with her and Troy Donockley , he founded the band Auri , which released their debut album of the same name in 2018.
style
Holopainen's style of Nightwish differs significantly from the style of other keyboard players in metal due to the frequent use of string samples . Fast, rhythmic chord repetitions, dense arrangements and distinctive themes are strongly reminiscent of film music , a typical stylistic character of symphonic metal . Holopainen himself gives the film music composers Hans Zimmer and Vangelis as musical role models. On previous albums his keyboard playing is dominated by rapid runs and phrases, on later albums Holopainen concentrates on arranging and orchestrating a real symphony orchestra and several choirs .
Honors
The conservation biologist Jukka Salmela named one of him in eastern Lapland newly discovered fungus gnats - Art by Tuomas Holopainen Sciophila holopaineni . Holopainen commented: "I am very, very touched. This is the highest honor that a nature nerd like me can receive".
