Jukka Nevalainen
Jukka "Julius" Nevalainen (born April 21, 1978 in Kitee , Finland ) is a Finnish drummer. He became known with the Finnish symphonic metal band Nightwish and the Finnish progressive metal band Sethian.
biography
Jukka Nevalainen began playing the drums at the age of eleven, but could rarely practice because he had no rehearsal room. His first band was called “The Highway”, and when he was 15-16 years old he joined the first “real” band that rehearsed several times a week. After leaving this, he teamed up with Emppu Vuorinen to make music with him. Nevalainen had a fixed practice room with him, in which they played music together almost every day. In the beginning this music was mostly Finnish rock, but it quickly moved to a heavier style.
At the age of 17, Jukka Nevalainen was invited by Emppu Vuorinen to join a music project called Nightwish, which Vuorinen had previously started with Tuomas Holopainen and Tarja Turunen . They wanted to try out how their music would sound together with the drums. The band Nightwish was formed, with whom he recorded the first album Angels Fall First in 1997 .
His musical side project, the band Sethian, is currently (2010) almost completely suspended, as the members are busy with their main bands.
On August 6, 2014, Jukka announced that due to his persistent insomnia, he would suspend all drumming activities at Nightwish for the time being, including for the recordings of the upcoming album Endless Forms Most Beautiful , and would only support the band backstage. A return as a drummer, however, he initially kept open. On July 15, 2019, it was announced in a press release that Jukka will finally retire as the band's drummer and will hand over his regular seat to Kai Hahto , who had initially temporarily occupied the position of drummer since August 2014. He wants to continue his activities in the background and support the band in this way.
Nevalainen named Mike Portnoy , the former drummer of the American progressive metal band Dream Theater and Jörg Michael , drummer of the Finnish power metal band Stratovarius, as musical idols .
Private life
Jukka Nevalainen lives with his wife Satu Nevalainen and their three children (two girls, one boy) in Joensuu , Finland . He's a vegetarian .
