Angels Fall First is the debut album by the Finnish metal band Nightwish . It was released in 1997 and differs from the other albums mainly in the frequent use of acoustics instead of electric guitar .
Emergence
The album was preceded by an untitled demo recorded in 1996 by Tuomas Holopainen , Tarja Turunen and Emppu Vuorinen . The music on it didn't have much to do with the later style, as the instrumentation was limited to keyboard , piano and acoustic guitar in addition to vocals . In the spring of 1997, drummer Jukka Nevalainen joined the band, and Emppu Vuorinen has now switched to electric guitar. Esa Lehtinen also took part as a guest musician on the flute .
Again on their own responsibility, the band recorded seven new songs in April 1997 in the Huvikeskus Studio in Kitee , the musicians' hometown, with sound engineer Tero Kinnunen. This material led to the conclusion of a contract with the Spinefarm label the following month. For the debut album, called "Angels Fall First" after one of the songs, four new songs were recorded in August under the same circumstances. In addition was mastering of the songs by Mika Jussila at Finnvox studios in Helsinki instead.
The split single " The Carpenter " (with songs by Children of Bodom and Thy Serpent ) was released in the fall of 1997 . The album was released in November via Spinefarm and brought the band a surprise hit when it debuted at number 31 on the Finnish album charts. This turned the studio project into a band that played their first concert in Kitee on December 31 of that year .
In addition to the normal edition, a limited edition of 500 copies appeared. It contains the seven tracks from the original April recording session and has a different cover. In 2001 the album was re-released as part of the 4CD box "Nightwish 1997-2001". Further new editions were made, some with different bonus tracks. In 2007 Spinefarm released a version that included the song "A Return to the Sea" and the three pieces from the demo.
Cover
The album cover is a photograph made by Garry Black. It shows the full moon in the reddish evening sky and the silhouette of a tree on a landscape. To date it is the only cover of the band that consists entirely of a photo. The band photo to be found inside was taken by Toni Härkönen.
